having seem the mortar placement photo it remindeed me I was transcribing one of the Hertford Oral History Tapes recently and came across the story of a german bomber. The story goes that it is likely that it had been sent to target the airfield at Hatfield but had been damaged by our fighters. It came low over the Port Hill area, to a young boy seemed to be just above the trees and had smoke coming from it and was being chased. It followed the line of the Warren and the story goes it had spotted the gas works and was trying to off load its remaining bombs on it but missed and they came down on Hartham. It would seem my Granfather was on Port Hill at the time, swore, grabbed a bike and rode down the Warren after it, no idea what he thought he was going to do! I believe the plane came down somewhere around the Hunsdon area. Anyone else heard this story?
