You would have thought that given the fact that his wife is both a member of the Police Authority and Mayor of Hertford, he would have had the good sense to admit guilt and spare any further embarrassment.

Seeing as this happened in the autumn of last year, and Sally Newton was recently up for re-election, isnt it a bit surprising that this hasnt been reported until now? Super-injunction anyone?! I know Sally Newton cant be held responsible for her husband's actions but they do live together and I think it is fair that there is some association

The wheels of justice do grind slowly. Even if it was reported last year (September) by the time interviews with all parties are done, investigations, a descission is made to pass it onto the DPP, the DPP reach a descission if it's worth going ahead, booking a crown court date and finally sentencing... well all that takes time. Not allowing for holidays,like xmas/new year, or the fact that sometimes if the person who is handling the case goes sick it doesn't get passed on to anyone else, or even - though this "NEVER" happens - the case notes get lost, all in all this hasn't taken too long. Another way to look at it is - why was he not remanded in custody until the trial?

Ironic that the tories are always banging on about how we've become too soft on criminals. I wonder if he'd have got off so lightly if he'd been an 18 year old from Sele Farm instead of a 60 year old from Ware Park Farm?

Granted, the man my have been telling the truth and his tractor may genuinely have been stolen. However if that is not the case then his attempt to deceive the police and the course of justice says a lot about the man.

Not sure sending him to jail would have really achieved much except costing the tax payer. Driving ban will make lfe very difficult for someone in his position I would think so seems fair though could have been longer.
