Television reception
Hertford (or at least, Bengeo) seems to suffer appallingly weak TV signals. I'm told that the nearest transmitter is Ally Pally almost 20 miles away. Any suggestions for getting a decent (terrestrial) signal????

There is a local transmitter in Hertford. Take a look at the aerials in your street. Most will point south to Ally Pally (although I must admit I thought that high powered transmitter was in Crystal Palace!). You will probably see the occasional aerial pointing in a different direction. This is a local transmitter (I think it may actually be in Bengeo).
You will need to a) probably get another aerial as it transmits using different frequencies to avoid clashing with the Ally Pally / Crystal Palace transmitter and b) point it in the right direction.
Or get ntl to install cable.

The relay station is on top of the water tower in Bengeo. This is to cover the town centre and other areas that do not have a line of sight to Ally Pally.

Thanks chaps - I'll look into this. Actually I did have NTL cable but they are so useless I'd rather go back to the ordinary 5 channels!!

Five channels!!!! Where did you get that elusive Channel 5 from? I can't get it at all and my kids love that early morning young childrens stuff they put on. Where is your aerial currently pointing?

Forgot to mention - the Bengeo relay doesn't transmit Channel Five. It's only available if your aerial points to Ally Pally.

Ahhh - that's why we got it Steve. We were pointing south, got 5 channels but with truly terrible reception on all of them. Hence NTL. I think the culprit for the poor signal was all the lovely trees that surround our house. So there are SOME drawbacks to living in Hertford!

glad it's not just me! we've got ntl but their service is abysmal... and we can only get it on 1 TV - on the others we've got only 4 channels, and all are badly tuned in, even with booster aerials... you have my deepest sympathies!!

And you have MY sympathies for being with NTHell! ;-)
I wouldn't touch them with the proverbial. I chose Sky instead.
