I was driving home from work today, and yet again, a woman with a child in a pram was forced to walk into the road because of a car parked with two of it's wheels on the pavement opposite the Co-Op. I am amazed at some of the manoeuvrings that both people on foot and vehicle drivers have to perform in order to get along Bengeo Street at this particular point. [:(]

James, I totally agree with you. I was instrumental in getting the railings placed along the pavement outside the Working Mens Club in an effort to deter inconsiderate drivers from forcing pedestrians to walk into the road by parking on the footpath. However, that has not solved the underlying problem. In my opinion, in the interests of road safety, there needs to be double yellow lines on both sides of the road at this point. This is a busy road; a bus route; with two schools nearby, yet the powers that be seem to think it's ok to allow the indiscriminate parking and obstruction of both the road and the pavement. I'm not by any means knocking the Co-op, as they provide a valuable service for local people, however something needs to be done. The really annoying thing is that most of the motorists who are guilty of such behaviour probably live within easy walking distance of the shop.

Take a photo. Send it to the police. Actually, thinking about it, didn't there used to be a thread on this forum a long time ago showing pictures of cars parked stupidly?

Why don't the Co-Op and the working mens club work together by opening a gap in the gate and let the shoppers use the club's car park?? I've lived in the area long enough to say that the car park isn't full every day/night. Maybe even introduce a parking fee like M&S in Hertford do and Co-Op refund the parking fee if they spend a certain amount in store. At least this will stop people parking up on the kerb

I know that the Bengeo Club and Co-op have discussed the parking issues in the past and due to an inability of a) sorting out liability in case of accidents and also that people who will potentially part there are visiting the co-op or club! It could not be resolved. Perhaps the most important fact is that the Police have not intervened because Bengeo Street is so busy and the traffic parking nightmares of the co-op actually slow the traffic down that would otherwise be travelling too fast on a straight bit of road.

No what a stupid thing to say buzz, but a) how many police do you think regularly patrol around the Co-op let alone the town? b) I have someone who is in the Bengeo Club commmitee who (ie my father) so I know about previous discussions on this emotive subject and c) there are lots of parked cars along Bengeo street, due to houses not having garages (around the old Greyhound pub for one) and rather than move them off there it again acts as a traffic calming, albeit, nuisance at times when the buses are running through... To say or imply that anyone child, pram, mother, elderly person or just me should in anyway be forced into a situation by the bad parking at Co-op as did the other lady is acceptable is missing the point of my thread..

Oh and yes, people do travel too fast along parts of Bengeo Street, I live off it and watch it and guess what, hold my hands up, sometimes even I have done more than 30 mgh Mr Buzz !

BY the way, the internet is saying some of my post not being embedded. I in no way think anyone should be in a terrible situation when walking past the co-op and forced into the road etc. But traffic does go way too fast as its a cut through road to the rat run and town. (Hope the internet puts this in Steve !)

Double yellow lines are only effective if they are enforced. I don't believe there are many other yellow lines in the area that are regularly checked so enforcing the proposed double yellows outside the co-op would require a special visit by the parking attendants (or whatever they are currently called) or the police. Double yellows may act as a deterrent but only if people genuinely think they will get a ticket.

I have had to venture out on to the road when pushing my buggy as it is the only way to get past the cars that are parked up on the curb. I normaly have to wait a few minutes until the traffic has passed and it is safe before I enter the road. But I have on a number of occasions been bibbed at by passing drivers.
