The White Horse - Castle Street

Good beer, a no smoking area, adults only, no muzack, loads of character and a great fire in the winter. I only wish they still did folk night on Mondays. I'm not particularly a folk fan, but the atmosphere was good.

Nice pub. But if your taller than 6foot it can be a problem standing up in there. Low roof i mean not the beer ! lol

As do we all [:(] It was self policing - any broken glass - someone ran to the pub to get the duspan and brush from 'dorris' cupboard. Customers brought glasses back as they passed. No hassle, great people and my paper was always nicked before I could read it. I can remember those sunny days when I was busy but had no customers because they were all outside. The alternative option is to go to the Stonehouse and have glass thrown at you by the security staff! Let us back into the Castle Grounds [8D]

I paid a visit last night. The bar staff were in agreement that you now couldn't drink across the road. They were in disagreement, however, as to whether you could still drink oustside the front of the pub ("Charlie" said you can't). Unfortunately, Nigel wasn't around to give a definitive ruling.

The White Horse does an excellent dinner on a Monday night - but it gets busy so go early if you want to eat. (I went at 6.30pm and it was busy) There's no choice - it's whatever Nigel feels like cooking -but you can find out what it is up to a week in advance if you ring up. The theme has recently been "A Round the World Tour" and has featured various International dishes.

Couple of years ago a Hen Party arrived in the pub & started a round of (mostly unavailable, alcolpop) drinks. The first order was for " an Archers" to which Nigel, deadpan, served up a foaming pint of Archers Gold. Hen Party retreated soon afterwards......

This is the best pub I've been to for many a year. I've never eaten there, but the beer is amazing. Especially that mad green Spring Solstice that was served up during the April beer festival. A few St Austells brews would go down a treat - HSD if you please landlord

Well it has been a Fullers pub for some years now.... Nigel tends to put his guests on from Thursday onwards for weekend drinking; one of the very few Fuller's pubs that can serve "guests" (I can think of only one other & Nigel has that one too). He's "allowed" 3 or so although Nigel has never paid much attention to rules.... Visit the new redecorated bars (well The Bar - Other Bar being done tommorrow...)

Went to the White Horse last night for a meeting upstairs in the No Smoking room. It really isn't the cigarette smoke you need to be aware of, it's the wood smoke. It was choking up there. Smoke rises you see, so it isn't always good to have a 'smoke free' zone upstairs. I don't know whether the wood smoke drove the customers away last night but the pub was almost empty, unless they were hiding in the fog!

They've had several attempts to get the chimney to draw properly (rotating pots etc), but without any real success as far as I can see (this is also one reason they don't run the smoke extractor as it makes it worse).

It can get a tad smoky, although to be honest I prefer wood smoke to cigarette smoke. Maybe barring myself from the BH now .... but Rooster, much as you have every right to make a comment, there is quite a conflict of interest here. Basically the WH is your nearest rival (geographically & from a beer connoisseurs point of view) Posts like this & others (when you have no smoke-free rooms of your own) do give a bit of taste of sour beer… Like both pubs, but play it fair eh?

See what you mean Paul. It is weird but there appears to be a (friendly) rivalry between the two bars. Nice place though. In there last nite & the guy behind the bar was hilarious - long white hair & a west country accent. A Scotch chap was entertainig everyone in the "Bar"(albeit slightly a worse for wear)& some guy was trying to convince the landlords niece that following Arsenal was the way forward - somewhere a Village is missing its idiot....

Just seen this post. The reason the folk night ended was because the Real Ale clientele complained on a regular and unrelenting basis about the noise, making it feel a tad unwelcoming for those people who turned up everyweek to perform. However, some 'performers' did demand complete and utter silence whilst they were singing, and on occasions were extremely rude to customers. It had to be pointed out to them by other 'folkies' that it's a pub and people will want to talk, plus if they were good enough to listen to people would shut up and listen. A lesson to be learnt there perhaps? But - if you're looking for live music from all genres in a pub atmosphere (but no open fire), give the open mic at The Ram a go on 24 August.

The white horse isn't really an ideal place for live music, its just too small. Some of the clientele dont like outsiders invading their turf.

IMHO yes it has. I find the live music very invasive, you can't hold a conversation whilst they're playing. There is absolutely NO need for amplification in an area that small. If I knew there was live [amplified] music there I would actually be put off going.

Oh Yes - the beer festival bands are amped up to a degree, but the folk group most certainly wasn't. OK, it's not to everyones taste, but then neither is darts or crib! None of the folk group would otherwise have gone to The White Horse, yet they and their friends happily turned up each Monday - a deathly quiet night in terms of trade, and their money was more than happily accepted. I always think it's a shame when some locals believe that a pub somehow 'belongs' to them, especially when some of them sit nursing 1 pint of beer all evening then resent anyone else coming in who contributes to the pub's profits. Afterall, without profits none of the pubs would stay in business. Still, what the heck, things move on.

Agreed, the folksies on Monday night weren't a problem and probably made it worthwhile opening on an otherwise dead night. It was just the festival music that I found unnecessary.

Yes, I can understand that. The pub is far too small for any sort of band set-up, the amp rigs alone take up a lot of space and I agree that the noise level is far too intrusive in such a small area. I think the main cause for complaint with the folkies was with one in particular who insisted on complete silence whilst she wailed about the potato famine, and would then yell at people who had the timerity to talk - and they weren't even part of the folkie set!

It's a linguistic problem, I believe. Unless fluent in the the native language of "bo**ocks", (a dialect exclusively spoken within this tiny British version of the Bayou country) you've little chance.[:D]

I think what's being referred to is that the pub, recently, has been running out of beer for no apparent reason.

The "The Other Bar" was a vehicle, invented some years ago,for defining the Bar (on the left-hand side) from the bar (on the right-hand side) As Shunt says, it was a one-joke non-wonder that lasted far too long & fortunatly is now consigned to history. Other Barrers are now welcome to the Bar, assuming their visas are currently valid...

how can they have no real ales? It's never exactly been a lager drinkers pub. Also, it's not as if they can't tell how much beer's been consumed (well sold, I supposed consumed is a different matter!!) and should know when stock is low for re-ordering.

I was simply speculating on their supply problems. I wasn't peddling it as fact. For any pub to run out of beer is very poor and even more so for one that prides itself in being a real ale pub. To run out once might be forgivable, but for it to happen twice or more suggests there's something more at play than simple stock control.

This kind of chat with out anyone going and asking either Nigel or anyone who knows the inside facts of this is asking for trouble. I think we're all in agreement that we want the WH to stay successful but casting assumptions on the business' position - particularly in the current climate for money and pubs - is like a vulture sitting back to watch an injured impala. Stating ale has been sold out is fact; querying cash-flow is a very negative supposition. Please, people: less of the death-knell, more of the support to the business and actual facts. Viral marketing goes both ways and rumours can kill businesses.

Thanx Mr P. My thoughts exactly. I can understand the speculation I read/hear on this forum or in other pubs - human nature - but it doesn’t help and as a WH regular for nearly 20 years it is upsetting. There were a couple of fine ales on over the weekend (as good as we have had for some time I would suggest) & a lot of happy punters. I will do my damnest to support Nigel & the pub through this period & incidentally if anyone intends to ask me what is going on - I do not know, that’s Nigel’s business.

i struggle to see why they would be selling it when it is such a popular place - there's no doubt it must have been making good money. maybe there's been some staff problem, or a falling out, or something like that, and theyve got to find someone else? Or maybe the building has been condemned and is falling down? :)

The building is in remarkably good repair (amazing that a 14C inn can be like that & the far later Sportsman is barely standing). Nigel ensured before he took the lease that all major maintainance was brought up to date by Fullers.. I will now desist from doing Ms Lawler's job for her.. Oh & if she is logging in,the pub has been in the GBG since God was a boy(not just 2008). I ll be just a bit peed off Fullers if it does not make 2009.....

I'm a little confused here. The pub is still listed under vacancies on the Fullers website (updated 11/10/08). Does this mean the vacancy has been refilled by the previous occupant or does it mean that Nigel will be behind the bar, but not as the landlord [?]

You'll know it well - you emerge from Castle Street and glance over to "The Office" wondering when the f*** it will open (has it opened?) before lumbering through the variously discarded salad & kebab material and evacuated stomachs outside Zero's before realising that you're not actually drunk enough so you'll just pop back to the Horse for another one and then revel in the heckling you get as you enter the door all red-eyed and gibbering. Do you really mean "cleans its lines" or do you mean "flushes its lines"? Cleaning beer lines takes at least 40 minutes if done correctly. By the way, how do you know what all other licensees do when changing each CASK (assuming you are talking about real ale here)? That was an extremely derogatory statement to make, and may not bode well with other local landlords/ladies. If you are new to the job, I wish you well, but do not upset other licensees.[;)]

Hiya Admin, You are absolutely right, we are not the landlords of the White Horse, that would technically be Fullers. We are though, the incoming leasees and as such will be 'in charge' of the pub. Nigel is being retained as the manager and will have full control and autonomy with the day to day running of the Horse. As any regulars will know, Nigel keeps an amazing cellar, and his cooking is second to none. Our role will be to look after the vested intrests of the pub and it's customers which will include postings on here and answering any questions that our loyal and fantastic customers may have. As we said earlier, the Horse has undergone some restructuring, but we believe it is all for the greater good. We would really love any comments or suggestions, after all, it's the customers pub, not ours or Fullers or whoever. We really appreciate your support and custom, and hope to see you friday!

Hi White Horse team I have a suggestion for you. Fullers have a superb range of wines at their disposal. I'm thinking of the Jack Horner, Mad Bishop, Euston Flyer etc. How about getting some decent wines in instead of those english fruit wines? The only other choice is one red and one chardonnay at the moment. I'm sure customers would welcome this addition.

Your ESB is 30 odd pence more expensive that one of Fullers best pubs in Soho. There's no justification for it when Fullers other beers on offer at the WH are more fairly priced. It should be at least a bit cheaper than it is. Do that and I'll be very impressed and might even buy a pint again after not bothering for over a year!

If you have reason to believe it's an imposter then the correct course of action is to contact them directly, rather than indirectly and in public. The size is relavent because small (this is a small forum, like it or not) forums do not need to be moderated in such a manner. I don't think I need to tell you that the number of times a thread is read has absolutely no bearing on the active userbase. Silly stats. And yes, I could back up my claims on what *I* think is over-moderation. I know a good few members in real life with the same opinion, and is why I had over a year "off".

Hi Micheal, It seems you may be right! We will undergoing a review of all pricing in the next few weeks, and it would appear that ESB is a little on the steep side, I too had a cheaper one in London the other day. So, in short, there will be a price reduction for the ESB, but please don't tie me down to when and by how much, it's all very early days! Again, thanks for your input and keep 'em coming!! TWH

Hiya Frenchie & Shiraz, Apparently that sounds like a good idea according to my (very wine experianced) wife, so you can expect that to happen in the next few weeks, I will certainly let you know when, but please don't let that stop you coming over and seeing all the other changes we have made in the mean time! BTW, I print off ALL suggestions to be dealt with, and will always give an answer, so please keep 'em coming! TWH

Dear All, We are pleased to confirm that the White Horse has undergone some 're-structuring' and will be re-opening on Friday 24th October at 5pm. There will be a full stock of ALL beers and wines, including your favorites such as ESB, Pride etc. As ever, you can be assured of the best quality beer around as we are one of the few pubs anywhere that cleans it's lines after EVERY keg. Please come and help us enjoy this momentous ocaasion, you will be assured of a warm welcome from us all! Look forward to seeing you! The White Horse Team
Hiya Rooster, We are pleased to confirm that the Lines are cleaned after every CASK (you got me on that one!!) You are dead right that this will take about 40 mins, apparently you have to pull through the cleaning agent untill it turns purple then flush it and leave it for 20 mins. I hope this alleviates your concerns. TWH

Perhaps you can explain exactly why cleaning the lines after every keg is a good thing? Im not having a go - I just dont buy the way this is being sold. In fact, doesnt this mean the first pint tastes dreadful each time? Some could assume that... I've had a few pints in the past which were awful, and I assumed it was the cleaning fluid which caused the terrible taste. ( not at the WH i might add )

Hhmmm, there is the obvious choice, from the Brewery that was named after me a Sarah Hughes Beer would be great. Preferably not the Dark Ruby Mild. At 6% abv this would probably cause carnage.... Good luck with the reopening. I will definitely be in at some point! [:D]

Hi All, Thank you for your comments and suggestions which I will now try to respond to!!! Codek2 - According to Nigel, every cask has sediment in it which is likely to be pulled into the line at the end of the cask, which could taint future pints if not removed fully. Once the cleaning agent turners purple, it is left to sit in the line for about 20 mins to complete it's cleaning. The line is subsequent flushed with water to remove any possibility of a taste in your pint. Not only is this 'best practice', but in 30 years of doing this, Nigel has yet to receive a single complaint about cleaning fluid in his beer! Sarah - Sounds like a wonderful beer we'll have to look into it!!! The two guest beers at the mo are Deuchars IPA: “Deuchars IPA is a fabulous beer. A brilliant blend of malt and hop character and above all a drink with enormous drinkability.” Roger Protz, Editor of the Good Beer Guide And Butcome Bitter "COMMENTS: A notably bitter beer…amber in colour, clean tasting, refreshingly dry and distinctive. Made with 100% English malts together with a blend of traditional English hop varieties." Wingnut - I believe the Red Squirrel brewery is still going strong, it's one we've already talked about getting in in the future, so watch this space!! Doog - Fret not sir, Adnams is and will always be part of our 'staple diet'!! Phew!! Hope that helps, as you can imagine, we are going to be EXTREMELY busy for the next few days, so if I don't get back to any other comments for a while, I sincerly apologise in advance!! It would also be great to recieve some feedback (good or bad, we can take it!!) once you have visited over the weekend. Cheers to all!!!! TWH

I am worried that The White Horse has gone from curmudgeonly to the perky end of the spectrum. I don't really do perky.

Will you be making delights such as Muriel's pickled eggs available again? And is there a celebration Beer Festival planned at some stage? Looking forward to tomorrow night and hope to see the usual faces both in front and behind the bar. ps - Had a pint of Adnam's Old Ale recently as a change from the Broadside and can recommend this as a winter beer; lovely dark colour and malt flavour.

Just as long as the bar staff don't tell me to "Have a nice day" when they hand over my Campari and soda.

I believe that would be 'gross misconduct' and would result in sacking on the spot...........

And i've just been informed that THW doesn't, and never has, sold Campari, so I hope we're talking about the same White Horse here........

It's an interesting concept - managing future demand and stock control through the medium of internet forum. Genius really. While we're at it why don't the White Horse do chateaubriand baguettes? And another thing, I don't like pickled eggs. And why don't you send a taxi to pick me up about 5 o'clock every day? (ps I might need a fluffy pillow when I fall asleep in the back staircase).

The staircase remains, though what was left of the carpet that used to adorn it was auctioned off tonight for charity. [:D] Ah well, if you don't like the eggs you can always enjoy the twiglets. Great "re-opening" night - the WH was packed out and lots of familiar faces everywhere.
