My Dad is coming to stay with us in Hertford next week. Unfortunately Dad was diagnosed with Celiac Disease recently. We would like to go out to eat in Hertford (or close by) - does anyone have any suggestions about the best place to dine for a Celiac? From a quick glance at their online menu Lussmans looks like they have a few wheat free dishes.

I'm sorry to hear that your father was diagnosed with c(o)eliac recently. Strange coincidence that you mention this as I was going to start a similar thread last night too but didn't get around to it. I was putting the world to rights with a friend yesterday about the limited healthy meals you can get when eating out. Not just in Hertford but generally. I was going to ask for recommendations of pubs and/or restaurants in Hertford serving healthy dishes and the only place I thought of was Lussmans. The Salisbury do one relatively healthy dish (grilled salmon with vegetables if I remember correctly) but you have to specifically ask for it without the butter sauce. Lussmans did a delicious pea salad for me last weekend which was heavenly and I'd recommend that very much. I seem to remember it came served with seeds and all sorts of nutritious, delicious items. It's a bit sad really that healthy people are discouraged from eating out because of the extremely limited healthy "options" in restaurants. I say options in inverted commas because normally a healthy option is just that - a single healthy "option", so if you are conscious of your health you don't actually have an option at all - just being devil's advocate here [:)] Same goes for coeliac, gluten/wheat-free, vegan, raw food diet etc. It can really put a dampener of your social life! My friend with coelic simply doesn't eat out any more and I know many others for health and/or ethical reasons are going the same way. (Just finishing munching away at home on my yummy Co-op organic rocket leaves [:D])

Not exactly what you are looking for but worth bearing in mind: My OH runs a fish and chip shop and one of his customers has Coeliac disease so he has some special batter mix for him. The customer phones up and orders in advance and when they arrive, they get gluten free fish and chips (at same price as the customer actually supply the batter mix). My OH is toying with the idea of having it for sale for others as fish and chips is a treat that sufferers are denied. Do you think it is a good idea? (Shop is in Stevenage, not Hertford though)

Thanks folks - looks like the Bluecoat or Lussmans then. Also Kate - I think the Fish & Chip idea is a good one. My Dad lives near North Devon and regularly goes to a Fish & Chip shop that does a coaliac Fish & Chips.

Whichever one you decide upon, theadmans, do call up first to confirm the menu choices, just to be on the safe side. Enjoy the meal and the time spend with your father.

Hello theadmans, Lussmanns here. We are not a Coeliac restaurant but do appreciate the concern when looking for dishes/restaurants that can accommodate accordingly. We list dishes with a "w" to highlight no wheat and as we make almost everything in the restaurant we can advise exactly what goes into all the dishes. Dishes with a w* require advice so as to modify the dish making it wheat free. It is our intention to be Coeliac compliant in the future. Either way let us know as we would love to look after you and your Dad. Andrei

the George and Dragon at Watton at Stone do a separate coeliac menu - hope that helps x

Thanks Bengeobabe - having looked at their online menu (with Gluten Free options) I think this is a real contender for our meal out - cheers.
