did anyone else see the signs proclaiming a farmers market this saturday just gone? I headed eagerly into town, only to find it wasn't there! Can anyone shed any light? Is it this coming saturday? Thanks.[:(!][:p][:D]

What time did you go?! It was very definitely there at 11.00am, outside the Tourist info office. It was very busy, but only on til 1.00pm.

It was there alright, I paid nearly £20 for the worst rib of beef I have ever cooked. Looked more like a craft fair than a farmers market, very disappointing.

Both, Mrs. Newcomer and I enjoyed it and bought some nice bread and cheese and pickle for lunch.

I thought it was an excellent market and they were almost all Hertfordshire farmers. There was a good selection of produce all nicely displayed. The StGeorges day theme worked well, and congratulations to the StAndrews Street traders who decorated their shops - they were very visible from as far as The Wash. We loved the Morris Men too. We bought a massive piece of beef - and ours was lovely. (IS lovely - we will be eating it all week!)I think the secret is not to cook it for as long as a supermarket bought joint. The lady who sold it to me explained that as it is hung on the bone for 3 weeks (unlike supermarket beef) it doesn't need so long cooking. She was right. I was very happy with my eggs - fresher than supermarket and competitively priced, the meat pies had the best pastry ever, and the home made sundried tomato and onion bread was delicious.

I hoped that the flyers all 5000 of them, helped to advertise that the market was between 9.00 and 1.00pm. Last time it ran until 2.00pm but many producers were selling out early. Meeting half way - we close a little earlier and they bring more produce. If you really had such a bad piece of beef Intheknow you can personally complain to the producer as the next market is in Ware on Monday May 2 and I believe most of the producers in Hertford will be present. The next market in hertford is July 23.

Well ... the lack of on-line coverage is due to a PSU failure. Now back on-line. Yes they are v.popular but just getting to the stage where we can walk. Have got accreditation also and those stalls all had to be paid for, including tables, skirts and logos, storage, transport, erection and dismantling - and before anyone says anything - the producers pay the same rent as the other Saturday traders. The markets are under East Herts District and including Ware and Stortford there are actually one a month in the area. The producers and town centre traders all want a monthly market in Hertford (it is the best attended) and we are working towards it but .. it has to be done properly, profesionally and got right before rushing into more monthly events. I put banners up on the Iceland and County Hall roundabouts last Wednesday - then pray that highways don't ring up and tell me to take them down which they have done in the past. All these comments taken on board and we have a joint Town Centre meeting Thursday to discuss the way forward. Thanks for all the positive comments above. Appreciated.

why do the council make it impossible for any event to be advertised around the town. i find myself stumbling on to things without knowing they are there....which makes me wonder how many things i miss and how many other people dont know about these things[:(]

The Market was great. More Advertising would be good. Spent a fortune but every penny well spent! It bring's trade to the town and indeed the other Market Stalls and the shop's. Only where was the Ostritch Man - I was looking forward to my Burgers - still have enough to feed an Army or Mr Tigger at least [:D]

i must admit i couldnt make it but i too feel that the farmers market is more like a craft fair.refering to the last one in ware, it was garbage. Id love to see a gourmet market sloop.please.

sloop - totally see where you're coming from re advertising - but my point was that I did see a banner, but it would have been good to have the times of the market on. Otherwise you assume it will be on all day.. :)

Bengeobabe - point taken. Can have those banners on the roundabouts amended for next market. Justin - the emphasis on this market was more on producers. The split was very much in favour of them. Most if not all the craft people shared a stall. In fact we are moving towards having no crafts on the market whatsoever. No excuses but many of the producers/stallholders were inherited from existing markets. Now that we are accredited it makes it easier to source and offer space to those producers that we do want. The possibility of gourmet stalls is on the agenda for tomorrows Farmers market meeting between all the town centre managers and Council.
