Lost pubs in Hertford
This is interesting, so many forgotten watering holes...

and I think that the general idea is that people post pictures of buildings that were pubs, yet are no longer there. [:)]

Its interesting listening to a tape made by the late Donald Geall for the Oral History group about his early life his parents came to Hertford one Sunday and couldn't find anywhere to get a cup of tea so presumably all the pubs only sold alcohol etc. They came back to Hertford and opened a cafe in Bull Plain this was the 1930's how things change, it almost all you can get in Hertford now coffee and tea!
Another said there was only one barber's at one stage!
There are photos of some of the lost pubs in the new "Hertford through time" book.

Interesting stuff but certainly a few gaps such as the Brittannia Bar, Old Coffee House, Highland Chief and Sawyers Arms to name but four.
I doubt its a local production - The Hillside (as was) is only referred to by the Hooden Horse incarnation (God I hated that name!) rather than The Reindeer. [:)]

I recall reading a book about the history of Hertford some years ago in which was stated that at one point there were 110 licensed public houses in Hertford.

Very possible there were certainly a lot in Railway Street/ Maidenhead Street etc When you look at the number on the censuses listed as Licensed Victuallers (sp) it is quite possible!

I believe my Gt Uncle was well known in the Reindeer by the number of people I have to correct when they think he was my grandfather.
I just about remember him and he never spoke that I can recall, just grinned, but am told when he had had a drink he would sit in there and sing!
Not sure what he would make of it now being a vets!

For me, Braughing Sausages, Beans, Chips and an AK at lunchtime = fairly poor productivity in the afternoon.
