The Waterside

Went there last night. Very good meal. Service was excellent, but then we were the only people eating. I know Thursday can be a bit of a dead night, but I think this place is sufffering from having no passing trade. It is a real shame as it is the best restaurant I've been to in Hertford. I hope they can turn it round and find a way of getting some business in midweek.

The place i believe will only survive if they gut it and design it as upmarket/trendy bar to compete with likes of Baroosh etc,....not that we need another one.... Drinking establishments are not quite so reliant on passing trade and i think there is huge appetite for more trendy bars judging by how packed the non-pub venues seem to be Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun

if a restaurant is good enough you are not so reliant on passing trade as people will go anywhere to eat good food. or at least they should! I think the terrace area could be good for them, and i must say i thought that the upstairs restaurant was kitted out well, with plenty room and it had a really clean feel with comfy chairs, nice toilets etc. Having only been there once in there first couple weeks of trading, i met the lady who owns it, and i hope she does well

But that is what the've done. I would describe the downstairs area as an upmarket/trendy bar. There were a few people in there just for drinks.

Went in for drinks last night - I think the bar area downstairs looks great but the place was dead - so quiet in fact that we could hear the jazz from The Barge. We will be going back at some point to try some food as the menu looked pretty good.

Hi, just wanted to say this forum is a great idea. We were in the area on Fri night and having never been to Herts before, had no idea where to eat. I found this forum a few days before and we booked a meal at the Waterside on the basis of your recommendations and their cool website. It was fantastic! I loved the fact that it is quite small so felt really cosy - something you often don't get with contemporary layouts. Food was truly awesome and well priced and the service was great too. And we even got a complimentary moonlit swan on the river to watch through the open window. How much better than wasting money on a crap place chosen on the fly! Wish all towns had a forum like this - tempted to set one up for our area. Is it a council run thing?

I used to be the biggest fan of the waterside, having had several good, mid-week, meals in there. However, we went this saturday night - party of eight people - and had the most drawn-out meal I've ever had in Hertford. When we arrived, there was only us and one other table. We had to wait 2 HOURS for our main courses to arrive (granted, the restaurant filled up in that time, and was fully booked), and when they did, some dishes were wrong (Steaks cooked wrongly) or sauces etc. were missing. What really got me, was that in spite of this, and us politely complaining several times, the restaurant still saw fit to add a service charge (which was NOT paid!). I will think twice before eating there again - especially at a weekend; and from the general morale on the other tables, I don't think I'm alone.. Also, why is a good restaurant serving frozen chips? How difficult is it to chop and deep fry a potato? Answers on a postcard please...

It is still open - Had a pint of regular lager and a G&T there the other day, it was more expensive than Baroosh. Seems its biz is more reliant on alchohol sales than the unpredictable restaurant sales. As much as i wish it to thrive i believe its 2 thirds the way to a slow death.

I will be interested to hear your review, particularly regarding the service. For some reason, this has always let down this restaurant over the years, even though ownership, and presumably staff, has changed a number of times. Alternatives for steak in Hertford: Justin is doing a sirloin at The Hillside. Cafe Rouge do a couple of cuts at reasonable prices. My sister usually does steak for me when I visit her for lunch.

OK, out of the three options, please supply your Sisters' address. Also, tell her I'd prefer a rib-eye or fillet, both done blue.

I would like to respond to comment that I am more expensive than Baroosh, having just come off the phone them, you will find that I'm in fact 20p cheaper on a pint as with the G&T. The restaurant is in fact going very well and I am not on my way to a slow death. I have been reading this site for a year and always felt I shouldn't get involved but on this occasion I felt it necessary.

I went there a few weeks ago on a Friday or Saturday evening (can't remember!). We were out for a quick drink and decided to eat out only didn't fancy the usual 'cafe' suspects.............so we dropped by at The Waterside and found it good. Nowt fantastic (sorry Michell!) but good and I would return. There was definitely two parts to The Waterside that evening. Downstairs there was a lively bar and upstairs there was a restaurant that was very busy. And the toilets were good too!

I think that the Waterside and the surrounding area could be improved much more - why didn't the architects of Bircherley Green make more of this area rather than just have a dodgy service road and a huge wall - A parade of little shops and restaurants would be more in keeping with the location. Unfortunately this is unrealistic now - but it wouldn't have been when Bircherley Green was built.

Recently went to Waterside with the missus and the food was fantastic. The Scallops were better than at Jamie Oliver's restaurant Fifteen. The Roast Beef was cooked exactly as we wanted. The Osso Bucco was the best I have ever had. Service excellent. All for £59 including drinks. Back there on Friday night and can't wait.

After reading lots of good reports about the waterside myself and 7 friends went on Friday evening for a meal. I dont want to go into too many details but was extremly dissapointed. The food was at best average, side dishes and sauces arriving 5 minutes after meals. My husband ordered a medium fillet which was so well done it was awful. He sent this back and was presented with a butterflied fillet which looked inedible. None of the meals were hot and all in all it ruined our night. We did eventually come to an agreement over the bill but by this time our evening was ruined. Maybe we were just unlucky but we will not be going back.

Tulip, Why didn't you say that there was an invitation to return accepted by two of your party? This puts a very different slant on your story. What is the truth here? If something goes wrong it is only fair to tell the propreitor and give them a chance to put it right. It sounds as if michell did exactly this. You have not been totally honest with us and given us the impression that it was a wholly intolerable experience for everyone with nothing to recommend it.

I apologise for not mentioning the fact that a free meal was offered to 2 of our party. However this does not change the fact they we went to the waterside with high expectations and came away dissapointed ! Just because a free meal was offered does not change the fact that we had a less than average experience. I am sure that if we returned at a future date this would not happen again. I do accept that the management were very agreeable but the point is that we went on Friday and expected a decent meal on Friday ! not an average meal with a guarantee that next time it would be better. However one member of our party thoroughly enjoyed the Oxtail.

I'm not sure what else the options are for a restaurant once they have mucked up. It sounds as if they recognised they had made a mess of tulip's evening, tried to do what they could to minimise the damage and a compromise was reached. Ok, that does not detract from the fact that tulip's night was already ruined. However, I think tulip should have given us the whole story, not just the bad news about the poor quality food and late arrival of the side orders, but also the offer from michell in return. I still haven't dined at The Waterside and tulip's first comments on their own would be enough for me to stay away. The full story would encourage me to give them a chance. Tulip - Sorry for having a go at you when you were the one who suffered the bad experience.

Unfortunately people are more likely to report bad experiences than good experiences. How many satisfied customers just keep quiet about their good experiences? Lots of places may have had bad reports on this site that are not fully indicative of the overall quality of the venue. Even the much praised Hillside has had one bad report.

Maybe one bad report, but lets face facts, it is impossible to please everybody, thus i feel that this section of the forum should be scrapped, i mean it is silly to judge what other people think of some where, when how qualified is that person to comment, on how good or bad standards are. I have read people comparing the hillside to mcdonalds? Surely that makes a mockery of this section, and shows how silly it is.
"I have read people comparing the hillside to mcdonalds?" And many more who raise a cap in your direction.............take the good with the bad.............quality will out......whatever public opinion is aired on this forum about restaurants the consensus will surface....

I don't think this section should be scrapped - it's most useful for determining the general standard of a place. Ignore the extreme reviews (at both ends of the scale) and the middle-ground will tell you what you want to know. Like Ewoowar says, quality will out, as will mediocrity. The bad review of The Waterside hasn't put me off going there as it's clearly an isolated incident, but a valid review nontheless - dismissing someone's views because "they are not qualified to comment" is just sheer arrogance. How exactly does one gain the relevant qualification to state whether they had a good or bad experience in a restaurant? (p.s. and I'm sure whoever did compare the Hillside to McDonalds was doing so firmly in jest [:)])

We went to The Waterside for the first time last night. Starters: My wife had the scallops in a cauliflower sauce - excellent by all accounts - gone before I could knick any. As good as she's had anywhere. I had a blue cheese, poached pear and roasted walnut salad, which was also very good. Main course: Both went for steaks. A bit boring but we just fancied steak. My wife wimped out with a 6 oz. sirloin and as a result feels it suffered for not being big enough to hold flavour. It came with potato gratin, which was very good again, although I preferred the chips that cam with my superb 8 oz. fillet (rare and cooked to perfection). We had a side order of beans and carrots which were very tasty. Puds: My wife was full but I had a creme brulee. Not a stand out creme brulee but perfectly acceptable. We each had coffees, my wife's decaff was a decent one as well, not instant. We had a decent rioja with the meal and service throughout was excellent. The last few times we have been to the restaurant on this site, its service has been dreadful and the food unpredictable. Despite the change of ownership, we had been reluctant to try it again. I was determined to go until tulip's post. However, reading back through the forum postings we booked and are glad we did. Next time we'll be a bit more adventurous on our choices. I'll be recommending this to friends who are similarly sceptical about this place due to past experiences of the old restaurants here.

There is nowhere else to place this so I would like to thank Michell and her staff for getting in very early and cooking breakfast for the Partnership breakfast meeting . This morning there were more people than chairs and I underestimated the number of breakfasts, someone had to go without sausages and beans - but I am very grateful for Michell to open up early and have meals prepared for 40+ people. I enjoyed the meal and so did everyone else which is why everyone keeps turning up - it is certainly not to listen to me warbling on. If anyone wants to come to future meetings which is open to everyone please email me at htp(at)johnbarber.com. Lastly I'll post something on another board about the business directory and everything else the partnership is up to. Will liaise with admin.

Having eaten here last night and experienced the apathetic service some others have seen, I feel compelled to add some words on my experience. Out with parents for nice meal. Chose the Waterfront, booked ahead of time as it's been sunny all week. When we arrived (7.30pm) the downstairs was buzzing with drinkers but inside was empty (though we were later told there were two parties of 10+ upstairs that had arrived together). Each round of our meal was accompanied by increasingly lengthy wait and the poor (overworked, stressed) waitress was no-where to be seen for most of the evening. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind waiting for a course or two when a place is busy, but by the time we hit dessert there was no-one eating downstairs. The manager was around but we were deeply offended when she ignored our requests for the bill and sat outside with friends and a beer. What really got me annoyed though was her complete indifference to our comments that we'd been waiting so long.. To add a 10% service charge to my bill was the ultimate crime. I was expecting her to comp our puds or wine or both! (unlike Tulip, my disappointment was not even acknowledged). A three-hour epic which marred the decent (but by no means worth the cash) food. (average Osso Bucco with dull sauce, tiny dessert portions especially the tart tatin, over-spiced veggies). Having read a few of the comments on negative reviews on this forum I feel compelled to add the following: seafood was excellent with spoon-worthy sauces (green lip muscles and bream). Wine was good and chilled, and atmosphere was stunning. Steak was wonderfully tender as expeceted. Scallops, Toffee pud and Creme brulee were also noteworthy. It's a great shame as this place has much potential and seems to want to steer away from the den of lads elsewhere in the town. I will wait until this place inevitably changes hands before recommending to anyone. If you're going to be a restaurant then service is key.. If not, chill some pint glasses, add a tele and the lads will come, and another decent family restaurant will succumb to the lager-trap.

I think this is an isolated incident. I went with the other half again last Saturday and the Mussels were superb and the service I receive is always excellent. I am not doubting you but I have always found the proprietor exceptionally helpful and her staff very attentive. I think your last paragraph is particularly harsh. She does cater for those who only want a drink but I have never felt intimidated by the clientele. Perhaps they were just exceptionally busy as it was a glorios summer evening. Did you know it was the owner who was ignoring you of did you just assume?

I truely hope you are right and this was an isolated incident. To make me feel so strongly as to make an unfavourable review should reflect how dissappointing the service was. I totally agree with you about the muscles. Tops.. The waitress who served us was polite and clearly having a bad day. I have no problem with that. I'd be happy to assume this was an isolated incident but for the almost complete lack of acknowledgment of our negative experience. There was no intimidation by the clientele. In fact, although there was a large party of what seemed to be after-work drinkers, most of them left before we had our starters on the table. It was a glorious summer evening, and I can accept that there may be delays at a place with outdoor seating when the weather is good.. but 3 hours for a meal.. and no apologies (merely explainations from the poor, stressed-out waitress).

From past experiences The Waterside has been very good. So decided to book a table for me and my boyfriend again. This was back in March (only joined Hertford Net recently) We were gate crashed by 6 other friends, thought it would be a great night and to catch up. The restaurant was not very busy so would expect a great meal. Unfortunatley this was not the case as Tulip exlained. The manager in the end after some discussion did offer 2 free meals for my friends but after our experience I don't think I'll be going there again unless it became a MacDonalds! (might get a better meal)

bet you didn't go at a weekend... that seems to be the deciding factor - excellent on weekdays, nightmare on the weekends

I don't think that referring to a restaurant as McDonalds is particularly fair Hawkeye and neither is writing a review going back to March.

We went the other Sunday with the in-laws. The food & service was very good.

What has writing a review from march got to do with anything, If youve been to the restaurant then your entitled to review it. Is that not the point of a restaurant review!

Never again. Went for the first time last Friday early evening. Looked lovely outside so we went al fresco and ordered our starters and mains. Waiting Staff: could management or the chef please prep them as to what the specials are?! They didn't have a clue and had to ask, we weren't the only table that experienced this...you'd think this common sense to find out before serving people (soup of the day/fish of the day, etc etc) Steaks: way overpriced! I'm sorry but as much as I love a fillet steak, I do not justify the £18 price tag on an 8oz. Mother-in-law had the 6oz sirloin (£12) and I tell you, I've purchased a better cut of meat at Tesco's for £4. Even though the waitress asked how we would have liked the meat cooked, they both came back not as we asked. Unfortunately, my fillet was way undercooked (I'm heavily pregnant so cannot have a rare bit of meat) and sent it back. It did come back cooked to perfection but everyone had finished eating by the time I started. My side-order of veggies had also gone cold. Upon receiving the bill, I asked for the 10% optional service charge to be removed. After 3 minutes of the waitress trying to deduct this from the final price in her head (10 points for trying but could she be sure?), she offered to get a new bill printed (thank you) and then we were sorted and out of there. I really wanted to have enjoyed it as was planning to go there for many months and this was a last minute attempt at having a decent meal before arrival of baby so wasn't too fussed about spending some cash BUT.....I have had better food from Lussmans and the Hillside and did not pay as near as what we did for the Waterside. Unfortunately, I wish we'd just gone to The Salisbury's pub grub. Sorry Waterside - but major disappointment. Another thing - I cannot stand owners/staff/friends of staff etc etc sitting amongst general public customers. It make's the whole experience uncomfortable and you can't help but eaves-drop......just a thought. S

I went to a friends Wedding meal at the Waterside on Saturday. We had a sit down meal with three courses and there were over 30 of us. Everyone enjoyed their meals, there were no hiccups and the staff were excellent. I'll definately be going again, perhaps even at the weekend!!

What emerges from reading this thread is that the food and service at The Waterside are inconsistent.

Sorry Nelse I don't agree. I cannot take any notice of a review from March and to label a restaurant like McDonalds is lazy.

Wrapper you seem to be the lukiest customer that has ever been to the Waterside, I just wish were all lucky enough to recieve the same quality of food and service as you consistently seem to.

So what your saying WRAPPER is that you are ignoring more than half the posts (thats the first three and a half pages) Because they don't fit in with your time scale!!!! Seems a strange way of judging a restaurant to me... Whats with the date of march anyway.... why not febuary, april or even may..........

Probably because it contributed nothing to the discussion. You haven't been singled out. Others will be removed as well.

I don't have shares in the place but have been in there on a Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night and a Sunday lunchtime and have always had an excellent time. I haven't been very lucky as it is a quality establishment. Please remember that you are reveiewing a restaurant here so your opinions should be of a sufficient quality and making crass gags negates the whole purpose of this portion of the excellent website. I criticised the Hillside but did it in a CONSTRUCTIVE manner and Justin was honest enough to admit there may have been mistakes on his part.

I dont agree with that. I do not believe you were constructive at all, but i have to accept the good with the bad sometimes. Incidentally £18 for 8 oz fillet steak is an absolute bargain.

It was actually my wedding that apartmenter attended on saturday, & I have to say that everything went perfectly. We chose the Waterside to host our wedding breakfast as we were having a small & relatively low-key affair during the day, & the location is lovely in the summer. After a pimms reception in the sunshine, 30 of us sat down to eat at 4pm upstairs. We had pre-ordered the food to make life easier, only one dish came out wrong & was immediately changed for the correct one. Everybody said how good the food was, particularly those who had steak commented on how it had been cooked perfectly to their taste. We did find that those who got their food first were half way through their meal by the time the last people were served, however this was understandable catering for such a large group. We had a lovely time & can only say thank-you to Michelle & Theresa for everything they did to make the afternoon go so well.

Well I feel if you read my posts again Justin I was in no way petty or vindictive and your responses to me were that I should have complained at the time but you reluctantly accepted my comments.

i agree with justin. name me a restaurant that does a good fillet steak for under £18? very easy to make comment but do you know how much they buy it in for? the same old story-why do restaurants mark food and wine up 3 to 4 times? to make a bit of profit i assume!

I dont understand why you say this. I cannot give my opinion on the quality of the meat they use as i have not been for ages, (sorry michell). I have recently bought an 8oz fillet of glen fyne scotch beef for £8.50, and to make the proper mark up on this when you consider that probably also included will be chips, mushrooms, toms, bearnaise, watercress would be roughly around £40.[:0] What is not being taken into account is a restaurant needs to have mark ups to survive and at £18 a fillet that equates a phenomanal bargain. Do you think that a restaurant should just sell the ingredients and wine at the same price they buy them.? How do you think the skilled chefs in kitchens get paid, the waiting staff, the bills, the advertising, blah, blah, blah.? and still profit? YOur comment on rip off britain and using this as an example is, without sounding rude, narrow minded. This country does a lot of ripping off but im confident in saying that food is cheaper now than ever before. A restaurant example i would give are the pizza, pasta places that charge £8, £9 for a pizza, which ingredients cost maybe 50p or so. I find it funny and sad that a lot of our nation wont pay more than £3.50 to buy a chicken for example, but wont think twice on buying a car for £25,000.

What a very strange comparison [?] What people don’t consider is the cost of all the Paxo needed to stuff your average free-range BMW… And this is till off topic, sorry.

Why strange? it is an example meant to point out that the cost of living is more and more, but people pay less and less for food. and my example fits perfectly[:D][:D][:D][:D]
