i'm also after a rather large timber order. I tried beaumont forest and A10 timber, but they were susprisingly more than Travis Perkins! Very odd.

Have you tried Leaside timber in Hoddesdon.We use them at the company I work for.

You could try Norburys in Marshgate Drive for timber, we use them a lot.

I've just been down to Norburys but they didn't stock the timber size I need. I have checked the online prices at Beaumont Timber in Hoddesdon and they came up 40% cheaper than Wickes. I have in the past, been to Jewsons but they seem to view a member of the public as an opportunity to make a mug of a stranger. I won't go there again. I got the same treatment recently at Hertfordshire Plastics on Caxton Hill. It must be my face ;o)

As the Op suggested nominating local traders against the "big boys", may I recommend the Vegetable stall in Market Square, outside the White Hart. Most of the veg is superior and cheaper than that found in the local supermarkets, and the guys who work there are cheerful and helpful (Tesco please take note!)

I use A10 Timber - don't know how they compare on price but they are very knowlegeable, helpful, and will cut it to any size you want if you need them too. If you know your exact measurements this can take the pain out of cutting it accurately yourself. They will also home deliver too.

Botsfords: they ordered in some floor finish for me that they don't stock usually. It was ready for me to collect the next day. Their price £47.95. Homebase £50.99 and B&Q £49.98. The new guys are always willing to try :)

Albany Radio in Fore St gets my vote. Last week I needed a tumble drier quickly, looked on the web for the best price locally, including Curry, Comet and others. I then rung Albany Radio their price matched all the others, having my choice in stock I bought it. Yet another happy customer. Not only that but when you talk to them they know their trade and can advice you. The usual disclaimer applies in that I have no connection with them other than being a satisfied customer

HIDDEN GOLD Henry's - Warehams Lane, just past The Which building (left indicator on quickly), then as you turn into the road, last on the right. DIY goods for a man seeking humble solace from the wife with good advice rather than crisis advice. Cheaper than the big boys. Everything I need, I get from there. Both Malcolm and Malcolm (yes, there are two!!) are great for advice and have and get anything you want and the usual items such as drills, screws, hardware goods etc Just don't mention the war and be prepared for a chat. Superb, simple lean-on-the-counter service with a smile.

Here's another recommendation for Henry's. 200 wood screws Wickes £3.36 Henry's £2.64 Wickes seem to have a policy of being 30-60% more expensive than local equivs.
