Hi, I am looking into my grandfathers Richard Pettit's background. On the 1911 census he is down as living at 49 Castle Street. His occupation as a chauffer domestic, Would anyone have any idea how I could find out if he was a chauffer to someone at the castle during 1911. I'm afraid I don't know Hertfordshire at all so would be very grateful of any suggestions. Thanks Derek

Derek Try a search on 4,5,6,7,8 Water Lane which is the new name, or near where 49 Castle Street resides. Good luck

This may be of interest http://www.hertford.gov.uk/History-of-the-Castle-History-of-Hertford-Castle-4445.asp?page=4445 I am sure there were staff working for the castle that lived in the cottages in Water Lane and Castle Street, not sure on dates I will see if I can find out more in my many books for you. Castle Street was also home to a number of people who had chauffeurs so I will see if I can find out anything for you. It is possible he worked for the people living in Wallfields there is a book about that area I will look at later for you and see if there is any mention 49 would have been just beyond Pegs Lane coming from the town so Wallfields was just behind it. All changed now since they put Gascoyne Way in!

Could he have been working for the Crawley family who originally had a wheelwright's business where the current Gates Garage is now? I believe they expanded into other areas and chauffeur business would not be beyond the bounds of possibility.

I have aske a local historian and this is her reply, looks like Wallfields is most likely if you want me to investogate more when I am at the archives let me know. "No. 49 was the lodge to Wallfields, so perhaps he was working for the family in occupation before HRDC days - pre: 1951." I have a photo of my grandad Pettit standing next to a very old car and another with a group of people who look like staff one is a chief. But on the back of the photos it says Chilham castle and thats what I have always been told is where he worked, although I have never found any information to back this up. I am very grateful for you looking into this for me Derek
