Where would a welder have worked in 1950's
Can anyone think where a welder might have worked in Hertford in the 1950's.
I am trying to help someone with thier grandfather's whereabouts and we know he lived in St Johns Street from c 1955 to 1958 and was a welder but not who he worked for.
He was Polish and a former seaman so can't think he would have worked on ships!!

Mailyn,would he have travelled to Ware and worked at Wickhams.I know this not Hertford but it may help.
There would also may be Hertford Sheet Metal that used to be at Dicker Mill but I dont know how far back in time they went.

There could be numerous places of employment for a welder at that time. He could have worked on the railways,coachworks,or motor industry. Most engineering companies would have had a welder at that time aswell.

This is true Dutch Knight, but I have remembered a good possibility would have been Chaseside that used to be, many years ago, on all of the Gates site , including the flats that have been built in the front.
They built and repaired diggers, I think similar to JCB's,and were the first on the site to sell and repair Ford cars under the same name.

Thanks for all those ideas not sure I am ever going to be able to find out for sure, he was not here long came about 1954/1955 died 1958.
