Hertford from the air 1928
This is fascinating I think hope some of you will do as well, just been given the link by someone who knows my mad passion for Hertford and its past!

So far I have spotted the following that are no more The old water tower at Bengeo, Kingsmead School which had been the workhouse, Oak, Ash and Elm Streets, The terrible housing of "Butcherly Green" ...................see what you can spot that is no more

Some great photos. Good to see the lawn tennis courts being used in front of the Castle and is that the old covered market at the back of the Corn Exchange? I'd completely forgotten that existed.

Yes thats the covered market...............for those who were not here it was where Barclays bank now is when the Corn Exchange went right to the ground floor and had a proper stage and everything!
Barclays at that time was in Fore Street with all the other banks, Lloyds included!

Well the clues are;
The war memorial is there so post 1921.
The Wash is there so pre 1940's doodlebug remodelling.
Butcherley Green seems to be cleared so later 1920's but I can't make out a bus station
So my best would be between a range between 1925 and 1935.

No St John Hall so pre-1939
Can't see the County Cinema either so pre-1933

What is the large building very top right, could that be Mangrove House/ Hall ??? Wondering if its the 3 story building I have been looking for in the Gilbertson and Page picture?
and just look much improved it was by Gascoyne Way [V]

Pre 1931 as the chaplains house to the Goal is still there where the County Cinema came, that house was demolish 1931 according to the new "Priory Fields" book so I think 1930 must be about right.
I wonder how many planes were taking photos then and how often?

I notice large residence on the corner of Queens Rd, now replaced by the flats (Queens Court?.
It looks like this house(s) escaped the wrath of Gascoyne Way - but were then subsequently demolished and re-developed anyway. Does anyone know any more about this?
