tracing a shop in hoddesdon
does anyone know where I might be able to trace photos/info about a shop which used to stand at 21 burford street in hoddesdon? it was a confectionary shop as far as I know. 21 burford st is now sadly a car park, that's all I know!

You could try Hertfordshire Archives at County Hall they have a lot of photos all arranged by town. They also have trade directories etc that could be of use.
It is in the registry office block closed Mondays open Saturday mornings and one late night

Wednesday 9.00 - 17.00
Thursday 9.00 - 17.00

According to my 1936 Kelly's directory a Mrs E Bloomfield lived at no 21 and next door at no 23 was Harwood & Burr confectioners.

Yes that's the relation I was wondering about, and according to the last census it was her husband Bert RObinson living there with his parents and I believe they lived and worked at the shop. I was presuming 21 and 23 were next door to each other. This is brilliant - what's a Kelly's directory if you don't mind me asking?

Kelly directory was the list of who lived where and who had what businesses pre telephone directories.
Hertfordshire Archives at County Hall have them for a lot of years for each town in Hertfordshire they are on the shelves so you can just go and look at them you don't have to order them up like the electoral rolls.
The very early ones had a lot of towns in one book then they became one edition per town, they are great for finding people if you have an idea where they might have lived.

You are quite right Marilyn, my one which I acquired from my father covers Hoddesdon, Ware, and Hertford. I also have from 1957 a similar directory from Kent Service, Strand, London which covers the same area.

The very early ones 1890's etc seem to cover the whole of Hertfordshire, I would guess it is down to population!
