Hi, I was hoping that someone could give me their opinion of the Hornsmill estate and the area. I live in the bengeo side of town and have a friend with family looking to move to Hertford and have seen some places in Hornsmill area, near the harts and horns pub and want to know what it is like. I remember a few years ago there was some anti-social behaviour in this area and what to check if this was still the case. Your comments are much appreciated. Thanks

I lived on Purkiss Rd for a short period about 11 years ago and it was a horrible experience. Neighbours who sat on our front garden wall drinking stupidly strong lager and throwing the cans in our garden. A woman encouraging a fight in the gardens. My wife was verbally abused, when she returned from work one day asked by another neighbour, a schoolboy, if she would like to suck his c**k. Our cars were vandalised. Our friends cars were vandalised when they visited. The child who lived next door torched a parked car, witnessed by both me and a visiting council official and when we told his father and the boy denied it his father just shrugged his shoulders. Times may have changed. But I would not live there. It's not worth the risk.

Hornsmill is quite a mixed area. Anything on the far side of Brickendon Road (Cecil Road, Brickendon Lane, Purkiss Road) I'd avoid, but the near side is all good (Pearson Road, Liberty Close, Tanners Crescent, Mandeville Road).

Although Cecil Road is named as a problem area I have to say that having lived on Cecil Road for the past 20 years we have never had any problems. Please don't generalise and give everyone in an area a bad name as I can assure you with regard to the Hornsmill that the majority of people are kind, genuine and helpful. Yes there are problems but that is the case anywhere.

Cecil road is generally made up of hard working people, like myself! It has it's issues but so do other areas around town. Many of the houses are privately owned and their owners are generally public sector workers. It is affordable housing edged with wonderful countryside.....I think this forum is a wrong place for a holistic opinion as there are some very opinionated people who write on these threads and that don't tell the whole story!

we nearly bought one of the three houses next to the Harts Horns pub but two things put us off: 1. the river running past the end of the garden - not good for kids or flooding 2. As I was walking down the stairs, I noticed 2 people taking ferrets for a walk on leads!!!!!

ha, i think we looked at one of those flats too. They were pretty nice, but yes the river was too risky, just too close. Also we didnt like being so close to the pub. I wonder if they flooded when the riverside garden centre flooded a couple of years ago?

Very true about opinions....but we are not all lager swilling vandals either! I think I'm a nice person, with a family, I work hard for a living and look after my house and surroundings (and like wise with my neighbours too). I love hertford but can't afford to live anywhere else! The houses here are spacious and have massive rear gardens! I like it here.

The only time somebody ever threatened to kill me in the 10 years I've lived in Hertford, and in fact in my whole life, was a resident in Cecil Road. I was delivering something he had ordered himself and it was dark and I was a young girl on my own. Very nasty piece of work. Fortunately work banned me from ever delivering to his address again for safety reasons.

I've had dealings with people from all corners of Hertford. In Cecil Road I met some of the most generous, honest and profoundly intelligent people with real human values and some who were a bit rough with a bit baggage and difficult life issues. In Bengeo, I have come across some of the most mean-spiritedly selfish and plain nasty examples of humanity dressed in Prada toting Harvey Nics carriers. I know some jolly nice people there too.
