Farnhams - newsagents (did my paper round from there in 80's) Munnings - chinaware very poor memory from me, although only goes back to the 70s!

Colour Studio - photography/art stuff. Irene Hunt - wool and stuff - used to get dragged in there by my mum! Roses - tobacconist/sweets & other stuff for teenage boys from RHS (ahem!). Colemans - shoe shop (Percy Coleman?). Wrens - another tobacconist/confectionery

You are doing very well though Wren's was a bakers, Railway Street and Ware Road.....Josiah Wren was mayor! Percy Coleman was indeed one of the shoe shops on The Wash but who remembers the other one his brother? and had 2 sets retail usage Railway Street. Now the ladies dress shop. Need some longer memories though I notice its the older ones that have not yet been done! I will give it longer before I put in any missing answers! Feel free to add to the list they were just some we came up with in conversation this morning!

Harry and May- the shop to get your clothes from before the advent of boutiques.... Coleman shoeshops- I went to school with Sally Coleman, daughter of Percy, I think, cant remember whether she always had shiny new shoes though...

How about the Blue Boot Store in Maidenhead St.& Taibs radio shop & barbers (opposite Botsford) in Honey Lane behind Burtons c.1940/50.Also Elliotts radio/tv/record shop.I remember them well.

La Vanita was a hairdressers my mum used, where the cosmetic dental place is now round the corner from Aqua Restaurant (and also formerly International Lamps) and I remember having my first spray of Elnette Hairspray in there! It was a huge two storey salon, loads of hairdressers and Brian, chief stylist and owner lived in Watton at Stone..

Also "Bridens Bakers" in Port Vale, on the corner of George Street I think. Up on Bengeo Street was "The Larder" sweet shop which was later to be "Bush Babes".

Does anyone remember 'Emertons' originally it was in Port Vale near The Millstream Pub. Then it moved to the lower corner in Byde Street? When I lived in Molewood Road some of the older residents at the time, told me there were shops in Wellington Street at one time. If you know the area it would be hard to imagine now!!

Things do change or do they! We now say that we have too many of one class of outlet in Hertford. I remember 4 furniture shops in Hertford. Cousins Fore St Fordhams Fore St Woodhouse Fore St Boydes Parliament Square They are now all restaurants with the exception of Fordhams, who are now Marshalls. Cousins is now ASK Woodhouse is Prezzo Boydes is Cafe Rouge At the end of the day they are all keeping Hertford busy, and attracting people in to our County Town, although in in the evening, rather than in the day.

Keeping off the Bengeo area as there is an exhibition in the Museum next year which will tell you all about the many shops and pubs in Port Vale, Nelson Street, Wellington Street, Byde Street, Fanshawe/Elton Road, Bengeo Street etc etc. many were just converted front rooms. Just to say the one on Bengeo Street was Mrs Onyon's later Twigger's that became Bush Babies I was really thinking more about the shops in the town centre. When I was growing up there were a lot of shoe shops.............things do change! Toy Shop on Bull Plain was "The Toy Centre" run by Mr Frank Chappell (sp)

I am suprised no one seems to have come up with the answer to Culls, now Gayes formerly the White Swan when it was Culls it was a sweet shop and tobacconist I think with the dirtiest net curtain in the world!

Oh yes, l remember Culls. Run by a couple of really elderly gents if l remember rightly. Also brought to mind The Welcome in Railway St which was run by two older ladies!! Always got my lemonade powder there!

I haven't posted for ages but still look in regularly and couldn’t resist adding a couple of names from the mid 60's. Apologies in advance if I have got the names wrong ! Does anyone remember two shops slightly away from the town ? The first was an off license on Hornsmill Road, almost opposite Webbs factory. I think it was called Huckles. My dad bought our first packets of Golden Wonder crisps from Mr Huckle and they tasted great. The second shop was to be found at the bottom of Brickendon Lane. If my memory serves me right, it was called Rayments. They has a Post Office and that's where I opened my first savings account. I can remember visiting with my mum and being mesmerised as the assistant counted bundles of ten shilling notes (it was around 1966 !). Great memories.

Back on the Bengeo side of things. My neighbour remembers Emertons in Port Vale and there was certainly a shop in Nelson St and Wellington St- these cottages still have front large windows.
