Visited on 28th May 2005. [:)] What was good: the food, the atmosphere [:(] and what wasn't: the wait between courses, the cleanliness of the cutlery, the temperature (my wife and her mate were both too cold, but then to be fair they are both nesh) And the ratings... Food quality: 4/5 Food was fantastic - our party had tuna, sea bream, gnochi and steak, all enjoyed. The only reason this is a 4 rather than a 5 is because the menu doesn't really offer anything different to other restaurants of a similar type. What they did was prepared, cooked and presented superbly, but nothing on the menu seemed that unusual. Perhaps I'm just being harsh on this one [:)] Service: 4/5 Waitress service was fantastic - a definite 5 for that one, but there was a huge gap between starter and main course (for which our waitress, unprompted, apologised on a couple of occasions). Atmosphere: 5/5 We ate downstairs, atmosphere is great - a good buzz in the air. The place was packed. Value for Money: 4/5 Pretty good - we paid around £80 for a party of four (2 3-courses and 2 2-courses)

Agree with the limited menu and you have to make the right choices. I've not had problems as a couple but quality seems to suffer in larger groups.

Never had a bad meal, must have been 10 or so times. With regards to the limited menu, they have 2 steak dishes, 3 or 4 types of fish, several pasta dishes and salads, burgers. More than enough to choose from. Too much on a menu can be intimdiating and not cost effective (Gordon Ramsey quote)

I finally tried it out! Great service....but... Food (lamb skewers) was hard and cold by the time I got it. I great dish wrecked. Now I can see why people complained about cold food. As for the burger... it looked nice...but £10 with cheese, bacon and mushroom? Its more expensive than the Ivy! Loved the decor, service, but the very limited and cold menu will stop me from going back.

I noticed that Lussmans is opening a second resturant, in St Albans (where FISH! used to be). Must be doing good business in Hertford.

have visited their hertford and st.albans restaurants and have found food and service to be good.(the camembert fondue is amazing!) their prices suit me fine and you can go for a snack or full on 3 course meal. about the cold food, never had a problem myself, but then again i hate my food served at 100 degrees

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much we're likely to pay for 2 courses and some wine? I've just booked for some friends then thought about the price, we're all students and won't usually pay more than £15 each for a meal with wine!

if you only really want to pay that much, surely you're better off going to a chain reastaurant like Ask, Cafe Uno, Pizza Express, Cafe Roughe (although I doubt £15 will get you much in there) or TGI's - TGI's is only open in Victor's dreams!!!!

I know most people can no longer taste the difference, but some of us can! Havin said that, it's generally cafe prices and not expensive like many restaurants. I agree, the Hertford branch can seem a little cold in the winter, upstairs near the door. I think it's much warmer in the basement. Has anyone seen the plot recently?

I went in the week. The cost versus experience / service / food is always very good: 2 starters, 3 beers, 2 glasses of wine and 2 mains for circa £45 – bargain. The food ingredients always tastes fresh, and whilst pasta is a doddle to cook it is hard to do just right however they always seem to get it, the menu is not extensive (http://www.lussmanns.com) but I have never been disappointed with any dish I have ordered, the service is always good too, empties taken away and replenished and (my pet hate) the time between asking for the bill and it being settled is kept to a minimum (and you don’t feel rushed to leave once you have paid up either). The décor is nice too, especially like the design classic Arco floor lamp, just wish it would suit my lounge… If you just don’t fancy cooking or fancy a relatively cheap meal then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Being new to Hertford I tried this out a few weeks back - very impressed. It was a small menu but I prefer this and see it as a plus point. We had the camembert fondue and it was very tasty and different. I get a bit bored of the same old starters everywhere you go. For mains I had the Lussmann's burger and my partner had the Alfredo pasta. Food was very nice and extremely filling - too filling for any afters - shame. To be honest if you want a cheap eat then you could always try the shared starters like the camembert fondue or the Lussmann's starter and then go for an afters - the shared starters are plenty. One thing I did notice is that our coats were not taken when we arrived - personally this is not something I expect or want BUT it seemed the majority of the other diners had their jackets/caots taken. I find some restaurant staff can be very judgemental towards their customers - maybe if I stuck a few plums in my mouth and wore a suit I may get treated differently - this does pee me off quite a lot. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a local yob but a twenty someting wearing smart casual clothes should not be discrimated like this. All in all a nice experience though and one I'll try again (with plums and suit!) Food quality 5 Service 4 Atmosphere 4 Facilities 4 Value for Money 5

Normally I really enjoy Lussmann's but my meal this evening was rather disappointing, or specifically the starter. I ordered the Classic Bruschetta, and the toasted bruschetta was cold so I sent it back. The manager initially told me that the tomatoes should be cold, but I did point out (politely) that it was the bruschetta bread was cold. They took it back and replaced the starter, but what really annoyed me was that the replaced starter included the very same thin slice of parmesan cheese from my original starter! I know this because I had cut a corner from the end. I know they have tight margins, but I would have thought they could stretch to a fresh piece of parmesan. Does anyone else have any views?? The rest of the meal was good, I had the salad primavera which was on the specials and my husband had the pork loin (another special), although they didn't take my coat this evening. Just a bit surprised about the parmesan and it makes me worry about the quality or methods of preparations for the rest of my meal, as this is (was) my favourite reasonably priced restaurant in Hertford. did you ask just for it to be warmed? if so, i don't see any problem with using same garnish and they do have open kitchen which is always encouraging. i do love this restaurant and love it's informal service so don't have strong views on the coat situation. i wouldn't let it stop you from another visit, this is one of the most consistent places on town and my home from home!!

I'm not certain if the toast in a Bruschetta has to be warm or not. I think it’s slightly dependant on the restaurant/chef. I usually always have a classic bruschetta here and never gave it much thought as whether it was warm or not. I had one this week and it wasn’t – still lovely though – perhaps this is just the way they do it here and they warmed for you as you asked but it isn’t the usual way they serve it here. Re: the cheese, I don’t think it’s a problem that they reused it. If I had a faulty DVD and I had to return it and all they did was put a new disc in the old box would that wouldn’t be an issue for me either. I think it offers a really nice night out without breaking the bank - it always gets a recommendation from me. If people havent tried their is a menu online (http://www.lussmans.com) and its not too expensive to give it whirl.

You cannot be too careful, and the cost of the loss of a slice of parmesan cheese has to be minimal compared with the business that could be lost with an unhappy diner. As the new Food Standards Agency rules and regs are titled "Safer Food Better Business". I am with you SMT.

Sounds to me like they used something long / flat to take the topping off and transfer it to the new warm base, hence the used cheese, probably the same tomatoes too.
Reply ID 19012
I take the point re: hygiene. It wouldn't have bothered me about a slice of cheese but, most importantly, it bothered the person that was paying for the meal and that's what counts. And if they had just used a fresh piece this would have been the best method in the first place.

RE: Bruschetta ... I think it is up to the restaurant whether either the toast or the topping is hot. If you go to 'Ask', their bruschetta topping is cold, and toast is hot/warm ... really depends I guess?

If you get about you can find bruschetta with toast and one or more of tomato (usually), cheese (sometimes), garlic (most of the time), sea salt (most of the time), pepper (sometimes), and a choice of basil, thyme, shrimp, anchovies, capers, chilli, lemon, tuna etc etc etc. It depends on where you are! p.s. You have to take into consideration the conditions that the dish may have been subjected to during its trip from the kitchen to the table, being sampled/tasted by the customer and then returned to the kitchen. Perhaps we are too hygiene conscious here, or just plain fussy! PS I did not say that there was a breach of hygiene regulations. Read my post again carefully.

I have eaten in most of the restaurants in Hertford, and I have never had such an appalling meal as that which I experienced in Lussmann's last Saturday evening. My partner opted for the yellow fin tuna with mashed potato. The fish was lukewarm and tasteless. I have suspicions that the "seasoned mash" came from a packet. It was watery and insipid. I went for the blue swimming crab on baby gem salad. I asked the waitress what was in the salad. I was told "peppers, tomato, onion, oh everything" I was served with a bowl of lettuce leaves (most definately not little gem) with a couple of dollops of a grey guey splodge, which appeared to have little to do with crab. We complained to the waitress who sent the manager over. His only comment was "No-one else has complained" He then asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu! We declined. I would never go back to this establishment, and shall certainly be telling my friends of this experience.

How bizarre BUZZ ... I too attended Lussmann's on Saturday night and have nothing but praise for the food, Wine, service, atmosphere and non-smokyness. I went for the beef bruschetta and mash and loved every mouthful. The mash was definitely NOT out of a packet and was seasoned perfectly. I suspect the very negativeness of your nature turned the crispness of your salad a little limp. Anyway, Tuna is tasteless in nature, I've never known why people go mad on it? .. it's a poor man's steak.

They are completely different and tuna requires more vigilant cooking than steak as it can cook too far too easily. It also depends on how you like it cooked. If you think it's an inferior beef steak then you are probably having it cooked right through thus ruining the texture & flavour of tuna. It's best virtually raw - but ultimately, it is to your own pallette.

I get the impression that Lussmann's is a bit like like Cafe Rouge and Wetherspoons, in that they employ cooks and not chefs and most of the food is sent to them already part prepared and measured out. I could be wrong but on my only visit there, they ran out of burgers at 7.30. If there had been a chef present, he/she could have made some more in few minutes as they still had steak on the menu.

The whole point of these threads is so that people can post experiences, good or bad. I have eaten at Lussmann's only once, a few months ago. It was my opinion that the mash we were served was instant (out of a packet), I remember remarking about it to my friends at the time and we all had a taste and came to that conclusion. I am ashamed to say I am a bit of an expert as Instant Mash is one of my fave comfort foods. [:)] (Don't knock it till you've tried it - Mr Mash potato flakes, not that Smash stuff, and a big dollop of pesto. Mmmmwah! *kisses bunched fingers* [:D] ) I expect Lussmann's don't use it all the time, only when they run out of the real thing. Personally I don't have a problem with a reasonably priced restaurant using instant mash, so long as they are honest about it. The menu is a giveaway - if they say, 'mashed' or 'creamed' potatoes then that is what they have to use, potatoes that have undergone that preparation. Something described as, 'herbed mash' could be anything and not incur the wrath of trading standards.
Reply ID 19683
Buzz... no, I didn't actually see the mash being made, but I do know the taste of packet potatos, so I stand by my comments too. Maybe we should ask for a seat by the kitchens and order a double order of 'seasoned potatos' and see what they do!

went in the other day and asked about mash. was told that it was definately freshly made in house. buzz, they have an open kitchen, you could ask to see for yourself.
Reply ID 19912
Has anyone ever considered the possibility that the mash could have been frozen and not the instant mash powder out of a packet? If frozen mash is not defrosted the correct way, it certainly leaves lumps (and plasticy bits) and gives the impression that it is 'real mash'. We experimented with a pack of this about 18 months ago as a topping for the home made cottage pies and found it totally gross and have not used it since. The make we tried was called "True Mash" and the name supposedly indicates that it is frozen mashed potato, produced in nugget form. I am sure a great deal of this is used in the industry but no longer by us. Give us the actual peelable potato any time.
Reply ID 19918
The mashed potato in Lussmann's is freshly made on the premises (why am I repeating myself?)

We had a meal in Lussmans one afternoon several months ago.We took our baby [in the pram] in with us. It was not a busy time only a few other people in there. We got the impression that they dont exactly welcome babies in there.. even though he was asleep! We both had fishcakes which were bland and nothing special. It may have been the particular staff member who was just having a grumpy day. It has not put me off going back though, but I wouldn,t feel comfortable taking a pram in again.

We have been back since with friends and had an 'average 'meal there. Maybe you think that us people that have a child should be seen and not heard. As I said in a previous posting [removed] I would never let my child run around in a restaurant and that is my own personal view, but maybe this child could not help it for whatever reason.

my post wasn't meant to be taken quite so personally frazer. i was refering to the many people (obviously not you or me) that eat out and assume that a restaurant is a safe environment for kids to play and it drives me mad.

Ate here on Friday night for the first time in ages. We shared the Lussmans starter between us, which is a platter of various italian bits and bobs such as mozzarella, tomato, peppers, meats with pesto and oil. Very good. I then had a lemon ricotta ravioli, which was a special. It was good without being at the top end but excellent value for money. My wife had the fishcakes and had side orders of green beans and herb mash. She's a sucker for fishcakes and enjoyed that immensely but I can see why the herb mash comments were being made earlier in this thread. It was too hot to eat to begin with - as if microwaved from a bag - and just didn't "look" right to me. I tried some and wouldn't bother again. We had a bottle of the house red, which was very enjoyable. The service was excellent, not over attentive, friendly, polite, at the right pace for the meal. We didn't go for a pud or coffees but consider that £42 for two courses and wine for two people is excellent value (excluding service). We would thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone who hasn't been or hasn't visited for some time.

had a great meal here the other day, yet again this restaurant didn't disappoint. congratulations for hardens guide write up too!

Although I have had good meals here in the past, I had a very mediocre meal a few weeks ago, and sorry to raise this issue, in the light of the debate about the mash, but the chips really tasted like oven chips. The burger was very very pink, fine if you like it like that, but I wasn't given any warning or an option to have it cooked more. I feel that its standards have slipped a bit since it first opened, I hope it isn't getting complacent.

Had a meal here last night - haven't been before and was a little bit put off by the mediocre reviews but have to say that I've been missing a real treat. Thought the restaurant was great - service was just right and the food was lovely. And at £25 a head for 2 courses and wine I thought it was good value. Will definitely be going back because I wanted to eat almost everything on the menu!

The fishcakes are superb. Everytimes I've been to Lussamans I've had a good meal and would recommend it to anyone. Me and the wife try to have lunch at a different venue in town every sunday so we can try out the ample restuarants in town. Lussamans always comes up trumps when we've been there. Cafe Rouge on the other hand...

Yes - I had the fishcake...lovely! And the burgers looked pretty great too.

[:)]I thought I'd update the appraisals of Lussmanns since no-one has commented recently. We dine here regularly and the staff are always attentive and accommodating. The food never disappoints and there is a good choice of wines. It is always good value for money. If I had a gripe it would be the boring French fries. Bring back proper chips!!

Went there last week with a work colleague. My first meal there & impressed with the food. Had the Arancini Balls (!?)for starter really well made & cooked, followed by Burger - I will say one of the best I've had with excellent cheese topping - though I can see what possum means about the "pinkness" For me that was fine & as most restaurants are a bit scared about this it was a nice change. (Had a “classic” in Hard Rock Cardiff last week & after Lussmans version I wish I hadn’t..) My companion had the mackerel & then the fishcake - raved about both. Service efficient, friendly & attentive without being over so. Only one slight disappointment. As I was the only one drinking I had a couple of glasses of red wine - neither brilliant (first was a bit tired & in retrospect should have sent t back) & not cheap - should have been greedy & ordered a bottle.. As often in these cases would have not cost much more. Total with 2 starter & main, 2 glasses of wine & a mineral water @£40 inc tip. To use the grid.. Food quality 5 Drinks 3 Service 5 Atmosphere 4 Facilities 4 Value for Money 4

Anyone eaten here recently? Have booked for Sunday lunchtime & am hoping it will be enjoyable!
Reply ID 57691
Depends on your standards. I thought it was nearly awful. Service was slow, food was hot and cold in places suggesting microwave, the bill was reasonable for two - Our meal and one wine and two beers (£24) - after I complained to the manager. Just my opinion, maybe they were having a really bad day. Sorry, I won't go back.

If you're looking for somewhere to have a good Sunday lunch then try the new place in Parliament Square Deco, it might be £19 for two course's but it is very good and children eat for £5. The wine list is brilliant and reasonable with it. [:)]

quote:Well, I like to think I have pretty high 'standards' and eat at Lussmans from time to time and am always very happy with the food and service. I was last there a few weeks ago for Sunday lunch and it was very good. Its menu is quite varied, so it's a particularly good place to go if you've a group of people who are not all, for example, going to want a traditional roast, but perhaps a salad, fish or one of their excellent burgers. The menu is on their website, and I think they also do a specials list. http://www.lussmanns.com

Glad you enjoyed it. We always enjoy the food and never have any complaints about the service when we go in there. I like the place because it delivers what it says it will. It doesn't pretend to be 'fine dining', or 'authentic French cuisine', or 'oriental fusion' (no idea what that means), just good quality food, as seen on the menu.

having waited for 10 minutes to be seated in pizza express we decided it would have taken forever to get served so we went to Lussmanns instead. seated within 20 seconds, in their new chairs which don't look it but are really comfortable. Yeah, it was about 20 quid more but well worth it. i really really wanted something other than one of their burgers but ended up with the brie burger and bottle of house white, YUM. Best restaurant in town by a mile for overall experience.

Been to Lussmanns many times over the past few years and always had a good meal there. Menu is not huge but always good food and the service has been great too. Make it a regular haunt now although have to book on Friday evenings as always full (unless you wish to eat at 9.30pm). They also have 2 more restaurants at St Albans and Bishops Stortford which are both much bigger although same menu. BS is good if you can get a table outside on the terrace overlooking the canal on a nice day / evening.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Hertford but the last 2 visits have always been let down by the strong smell of grilled fish. I like fish (although my partner doesnt) so its not a major issue but last night we walked straight back out again as is was simply far too overpowering. I think they may need to upgrade the extractors...

quote:I agree. Though I enjoy some fish, smell and taste are so linked that my vodka and tonic tastes of fish in this kind of environment and that is not good. Had the same problem in the HHH. Open kitchens just don't work where fish is served.

Lussmanns have their own internet site and allow feedback. Maybe worth saying something on there regarding the smell of fish - one customer lost should for any business at this time should be one too many. http://www.lussmanns.com/hertford/feedback.asp

Went back here a couple of weeks back, after rather a long interlude. The food was its usual good standard and service good - so no complaints there (and no fishy smells over powering the place!!). The only thing that really irked me, was that it appears on Friday at least they have started this 2 hours restriction practice - so common of many restaurants in London. So being given a table at 7pm, we were told we had to be finished by 9pm. As there were only the 2 of us, it wasn't a problem, but if we had been more then it most certainly would have. I refuse to be rushed over my meal - I look forward to an evening of enjoyment, not eating to a timetable and if we had been a party greater than 2, then we would have gone elsewhere. Maybe this is a sign that Lussmans is doing so well it can start restricting your sitting times, but it doesn't work for me. Grrrrr
Reply ID 68873
Very happy to hear of your return and the good evening enjoyed by all. Tables booked for Friday and Saturday evening between 5.30pm and 8pm will be required back after two hours, the rest of the week there is no return time. This policy has been in place since we opened 5 years ago. I understand your frustration but advise to book at the most attractive time of 8pm or after and enjoy the table for the rest of the night ie 4 hours.

Welcome Andrei, congratulation for 5 years of running an excellent restaurant in Hertford !

I've usually enjoyed Lussmans however to temper the comments above I have to report that the last meal I had there was dreadful. I dropped in there during the week and I only had the pork belly with some mash but all of it was wrong. With the pork there was a struggle to find any meat among the fat - and I know this is normally fatty but this was exceptional. The mash was made in a blender going by its stodgy consistency and tasted awful - too salty and left a tangy after taste. I should have made a fuss at the time I suppose, as I said its been good before but this experience has pushed them way down the list of Hertford restaurants.

Must say i once had a lovely stroganoff from the specials board last year but other than that have been disapointed with everything else. Waitress once told me they serve their pasta cold as 'that's the authentic way'.

Hi Tiny Happy that you enjoyed the Stroganoff special that we served last November, 08. Cold pasta or cold plate is poor form and like you I am most surprised by the waitress's comment... if only I knew who it was. We get it right most of the time with the vast majority of our regulars so it would be nice to be put to the test once again. Our chicken is free range and LOCAL, just round the corner in Roydon sourced from two great old favourite British breeds - Red Cornish & White Rock. We change our main menu twice yearly and for our loyal legion of regulars / locals there are the monthly changing specials. It is here that seasonal recipies are put to the test and if they work will often make it to to the main menu.

My husband and I love Lussmans too, and go at least once every couple of months. The only feedback I would currently give to Andrei is that I would like to see a little more spicy food on the menu - sometimes I get in there and really want something like a chilli or a curry - a winter warmer that will get me all heated up!
Reply ID 69224
Hello Alxleeks We are not into lots of spice, try and leave that to those who do it far better. But, winter warmers to look forward too over the coming months are Nana Walkers sheperds Pie, coq ou Vin, game hot pot and Morrocan spiced lamb & apricot cous cous that should help heat you up. We are a European fish & Grill restaurant whith a splash of Great British clasics thrown in majoring on local, ethical and artisan producers to match.

I've just been promoted.. Anyhow onto the business in hand: We are not a gluten free restaurant but understand the importance and relevance of gluten free dining. We have certain dishes on the menu which are gluten free but cannot guarantee 100% gluten free production/delivery during busy service. In addition we do icon dishes with a "w" which are wheat free which I am aware is not the same but a move towards advising coeliacs what they can and cannot eat in our restaurants. It is planned that we will one day advise clearly what is gluten free, in the meantime pls ask the Restauant Manager to advise what dishes are appt when you arrive and we will be more than happy to take care of you and your guests. Furthermore gluten free on the go where we are listed will advise further where one can eat locally. http://www.gluten-free-onthego.com/ pls find our menu link http://www.gluten-free-onthego.com/

Am I the only person in Hertford who thinks the food here is bland and overpriced? My husband and I had a very disappointing meal there tonight. Firstly we had sardines and bruschetta to start. Both portions were small and for £5.65 for 2 small sardines we felt this was not good value. My bruschetta was small too and average. We had a fishcake for a main dish and a lamb burger with fries. My husband said the fishcake was ok, but we have both had better. My lamb burger was small, and very bland. It tasted as if no seasoning at all had gone into it. The fries were too few and bland too. The waitress serving us was lovely and sitting downstairs was ok, but nothing special. Overall we feel like too many corners were trying to be cut on portion size and we left feeling hungry. We didn't stay for dessert as we felt another small portion of something average would have been a waste of even more money. This is the third time I have been to Lussmans and every time we have left feeling underwhelmed. Good luck to Lussmans they must be doing something right, as they always seem busy and if they are making money then plenty of people must like their menu. It can't be easy to sustain a business in Hertford that's for sure. I just wanted to post our own experiences and review of this restaurant.

Frazer - no you're not! Following an earlier adverse review I gave it another chance recently and was disappointed once again. I won't be going back.

quote:No, you are not alone. Lussmans is more of a cafe than a restaurant, which is not reflected by £6.50 for a fruit juice! They are efficient in a business sense, which is what probably caught the attention of the sweary footballer, but they are blessed by a lack of strong local competition, leading to an undemanding clientelle, who are so suprised by "adequate" that they tag it as "exceptional". It just doesn't feel like an experience worthy of the price. Im ok with the main course prices but the sundries are the stingers. Difficult to relax if you have to check the price of every extra before you order. The food is pretty good, but not magnificent, or sufficiently different from what one might enjoy on a Wednesday evening at home. The most exciting thing about the venue is the facade.

You cant seriously call it a cafe...whether youre a fan of it or not....bistro at a stretch. It may be mediocre to some or good to others but what is withought doubt is its competition is all pretty dire...i think.. I think all its prices are smack in the middle of what i expect to pay, from starters to mains and desserts. As for the expense of the soft drinks, I confess that, because I held the menue for only seconds (not having one of my own), I may have misread, since it was these very juices I thought the £6.50 referred to. It may have been an adjacent item on the soft drinks section perhaps.

Hello Frazer Thank you for your comments though a direct email to me allows me (andrei @lussmanns.com) to review what happened immediately as opposed to finding at at a later stage and being unable to act. It would seem that we did little to impress and I can only apologies for the below par performance. Sardines fresh and day boated from the south coast should be 3 not 2 unless they are huge, I will now look into. Bland lamb burger is no good when we have spent both time & energy to find a great Home Counties Organic farm to provide us with all our mince meat and lamb. Again I shall look into immediately. Fries v our home made chips served during fish & chip Fridays is under review. Many of our local regulars love the steak frites and would shudder at the thought of using homemade fat chips - the jury is out on this one. We have carved ourselves a huge and consistent following with many restaurants over the last 6 years coming and going where the chains remain in authority; incidentally we are 6 years old this month. With approximately 700-900 customers a week we still listen and look to improve. It would be nice to have you back for a plate on us in order to give us the opportunity to demonstrate what we do well most of the time. Your postal address to my email above would be great so as I can send out a card on my behalf. Andrei

Hi Shunt I am a little surprised by your comment re "lack of strong local competition" Hertford is a haven for restaurants unlike 10 years ago. Today there are many more restaurants than ten years ago with countless more chains in town considering there was just Pizza Express and a splattering of ethnic independents previously. This increase in competition pulling in punters from all over the district has been both positive for traders and house prices but also hit the independent s very hard. We have been in Herford for 6 years this month and since our arrival the following have come and gone: Waterside, No 11., The Hillside, College Arms, Elberts, Deco, Mercahnt House, Thai Rack, & Cafe Uno the chain etc Extras are clearly labelled and the vast majority of our most dishes arrive complete not needing any sides. Apart from our recommendation by the Guardian & Which and the local nominations for Ramsay’s local restaurant and our most recent award placing us in the top 10 most sustainable fish restaurants in the country It would seem that there still work to be done. As always should your meal be poor in any way then you can always contact me direct [email protected] enabling me to act immediately. A

I'm intrigued as to how this might work better than speaking with the waiter/waitress though? Other than that, good responses to customer dissatisfaction I thought in separately acknowledging, taking ownership and offering action.

I feel the lack of one, requires the other in the entertainment sector. Like a M&S suit or a VW Golf, it is not cheap and cheerful and of adequate quality (more than most of Hertford's "competition" achieves), just slightly disappointing in it's lack of character, without there actually being a specific fault. Plenty of people drive Golfs and pay a premium to do so.[;)]

A lack of Jazz is a positive advantage to any venue.
Reply ID 76470
I'm not a jazz fan per se, though have dined and been entertained a couple of times at Ronnie Scott's in London's Soho. That venue works because of its size and because it is firstly a jazz club before being a dining venue, admitting customers whether dining or not. I could see this type of venture possibly working at The Riverside garden centre but not at Lussmann's in Hertford.

I'm a bit late with this review, but a few weeks ago my other half and I decided to go out for a meal to celebrate some good news. Before heading out we decided to try the Master's House as we'd enjoyed drinks there before but never stopped to try the food. As we approached the door we both took a look at the menu and turned to each other to simultaneously say "Lussmans". I cannot rate Lussmans highly enough. The food, drink and customer experience is absolutely superb. Over the past few years it has become my default choice as a treat for celebrations and visits from VIPs such as the mother-in-law! I can't wait for the next excuse to treat myself... anyone fancy a night out? :-)

Happy to report that there's no pizza here.

it's quite expensive for a childs menu. Eight quid for two courses and it doesnt even include a drink.

I think its aimed at slightly older children, so portions reflect that. Its worth it for the quality and service/surroundings. Gets my vote.

Lovely looking menu but clearly written by someone who does not have kids! I can see a couple of things my little one would eat there but it would have to be "Can I have it without the coleslaw please?" or "Can you do onion gravy without the onions?" [:D] They just like plain and simple and I just like them to be able to eat something so I can get a decent choice from the adult menu
Reply ID 80229
The new lussmanns junior menu was written by myself and I have two young children, As with all diners those with special requirements will be looked after. It is designed for those who dine with us already but have asked over time for smaller portions of Lussmanns classics for their children.

I have a son who loves food. He also loves to run around. He runs around a lot; at school, in the park, in the garden, at rugby , at football.....he runs around. When we go to a restaurant he sits at a table, talks a bit and eats. Sometimes, if the restaurant gives out a little colouring in pack or 'dot to dot' he would busy himself but he's grown out of them now anyway. Or sometimes he'd do whatever small table based activity we'd bring along discretely. But fundamentaly we'd go along and we'd eat. I remember a conversation with an ex-colleague who said the only 'restaurant' he could ever take his children to was McDonalds as they were geared up for kids and his children could run around. So......at what point do the children learn that it's a restaurant, not a play park, and a different sort of behaviour is required? They don't need to sit prim and saintly and speak only when spoken to. They can still be kids and enjoy themselves. But it's a different environment. Will they grow up expecting restaurants to be a place to run around and play off ground touch? With regards to the menu.............come on........a fish cake with greens, chicken with linguine (plain or with chilli), a cheeseburger (which I'm sure you could ask to have the coleslaw excluded), bangers and mash and a plain linguine. And the problem is? My only question to Andrei would be whether he would offer a childs portion of the other main courses. I see too many children come for a play and tea and have to cope with the "don't eat that", "don't like that", "won't eat that"............... Nowt wrong with extending children's palletes, especially within the experience of a restaurant.....in fact I'd say it's an ideal opportunity.

However I have no doubt that given another year of taking her to Harvester etc (where the dining and taste are not so fine but she can learn how to act in a restaurant situation) that I will be able to take her to Lussmans and the like and not trouble other diners. Totally agreed with you re the running around though - I can't stand going to a restaurant and seeing kids running everywhere, have never understood that logic!

thats not blatant buzz... Not by anyones stretch of the imagination. It's excellent how much Lussmans seems to read feedback online and respond. They seem to be ahead of the game in that respect. there's a difference (it seems) on this forum, between someone just advertising i.e. with a new post, and someone commenting on a thread. Also those with local business which are generally liked get a lot more leeway.

It is advertising. However, I don’t mind since its in the Lussmans’ thread and from the owner. I guess every response he gives is in some way advertising / raising awareness of the restaurant. Personally, I like that the owner identifies himself as such and responds to comments. If they want to add something about their establishment for free then that’s ok by me since they stand up and be counted on all the other stuff. There are so many threads where a mysterious 1 poster arrives says something great about a place that looks, to me, biased and then never appears again. That is what I hate. So, yes advertising but actually I found it also useful to know they have a new menu.

I guess in the eye of the beholder. Just because *I* think its advertising (of a sort) does not mean it definitely is since its somewhat of loose term. Is us even reviewing the place a form of advertising? If someone said in a pub thread “your beer at £4 is expensive” and the owner responds explaining why it’s that cost (or going to be cheaper) is that advertising? Is the owner of a business responding to any comment advertising? Anyway, I would like more owners of their business to be on here, talk about things people bring up, and since it’s a thread about their establishment it only seems right that they may say “well actually from next week we are doing X” - because I think thats useful to know.

Furthermore, I did not change your words. I added a post which expressed my opinion.

Quality locally sourced food cooked right in front of you. The burgers are famous locally. Reasonably priced for the quality of food and the waiting staff are excellent. They are also always open meaning that if you decide on a whim that you want to go out, any time of day then they can always generally accommodate you. I believe the positives of the restaurant speak for themselves by the sheer number of people who continue to return there on a regular basis.

Lussmanns has been a favourite of ours since it opened in Hertford. Only once have we been disappointed with a dish and the waiter asked us if there was a problem, unprompted, and then didn't charge us. If I had to be picky, I do think the service has slipped slightly, and isn't as attentive as it used to be but the food is spot on.

Hello Firedupinside I am afraid that the club will not be making a return but the steak, roasted onion & Stilton wrap is a winner which forms part of our lunch wrap deal, see below http://www.lussmanns.com/Food/winter-set-menu.html

Walked through town for a few minutes this morning and looked up a bit. Since the wrapper came off, you can see the wonderful strangeness that is the Egyptian style front. I also carried my eye along the upper stories of the road, there are some fantastic buildings all along the row, but Lussmanns wins the prize for odd! All I need to do now is take time to eat in there. I haven't been since the Saturday breakfasts stopped, the fruit and yoghurt was lovely.

Hmmm.... It has to be said, Lussmann's does seem to get away with a lot more than any other restaurant on this forum, I'm not sure that the owner of the 'Hertford Star Kebab and Pizza' for example would be able to come on here and advertise what specials they have on their menu for the coming month would they? I've nothing against Lussmann's, I have dined there and it's good to see local independent businesses being encouraged and promoted, but couldn't the same privilege be extended to other restaurants and take-aways as well?
Reply ID 83813
I cant comment on the statements that admin are bias towards Lussmans however I would agree that I would like to see specials from all of the locals.

Went in for lunch on Saturday and was really pleased with food, service and value for money. We each had 3 courses from the set lunch menu - both had sprats for starter, one pork main and one fish cake main and one sticky toffee pudding and one hazelnut and apple crumble for dessert. Washed down with a nice glass of wine and a cup of coffee each. Cost was about £45 for 2 people. Will definitely be going back for lunch again soon.

I am saddened by the final outcome in BS. Furthermore I'm frustrated by the initial plan for Jacksons Wharf which did not materialise that in the end led to our outright exposure. Thankfully all is not lost with Hertford and St Albans remaining very busy. We looked to provide the folk in BS with the missing link between high street homogenised chain and that of the high end often expensive and inconsistent Independent. With the location being a key ingredient in most businesses we could do little to compete in the cost and convenience challenge when we were off the beat and out of sight.

Hi Andrei Very sorry to hear about your Bishops Stortford restaurant. It must have been a tough decision to make but obviously the right one. The other half and I were shopping in St Albans on Monday and decided to have some lunch in your restaurant there. The other half was slightly disappointed there were no wraps but we decided to go with the 2 course set menu for £10.95 each. The OH had the pear & Stilton salad followed by the chestnut mushroom gratin, she very much enjoyed both although she did feel there was no mention of the goats cheese in the gratin which she felt it made it a little heavy. I don't like to send plates back with uneaten food so I did the honourable thing and just finished the last bit of the gratin for her, you could certainly tell the gratin was made with great care on the premises. I had the pate followed by the 7oz steak Fritz, both were truly excellent! I must mention though there was a little service 'hick-up'. We had to wait rather a long time for our starters but your manager noticed this and sorted it without the need for me to say anything, as soon as she sorted the problem she came straight over to explain and apologise. At the end of the meal when she brought the bill over she apologised again and had not charged for our coffees. The OH and I were very impressed with her honesty and exactly the right action in respect of the issue. Unfortunately it is so rare these days to experience proper effortless service, so thank you to you and your team. CK

Some of the more observant forum members may have noted, in passing, that I have had issues with Lussmanns in the past. However, I have been in contact with Andrei, and as a result visited his restaurant last Thursday. I am happy to say that myself and dining partner enjoyed our meal. I have subsequently been in email contact with Andrei, and whilst not saying that I may have had small criticisms, would be happy to return in future.

I'm a little concerned about the postings on this thread. I've got absolutely nothing against Lussmans and we have never been disappointed with our meals there. My problem is that it seems to have a permanent position at the top of the discussion board in the restaurants section. This appears to be because the thread is, for much of the time, a dialogue between the owner and various customers. I'm not sure whether there is an easy answer, but I feel it is departing from the purpose of the forum by focussing so much attention on one restaurant.

And in fact, it's important that people post their recent experiences to all restaurants because a recommendation for a restaurant 6 months ago has no weight really, as a lot could have changed. Also dont you see the irony in adding to the discussion? :)

What I see is a local business owner engaging with his customers - where both praise and criticism have been approched and addressed with an open and non-confrontational style. Surely that's the purpose of a forum like this?
Reply ID 85604
I did notice the irony in adding to the discussion myself. Probably a mistake on my part, but I am not convinced that the purpose of this is a constant dialogue between the business owner and customers. I guess it's a matter of degree. I wouldn't argue that the owner should have a right to step in and defend or make occasional comments, but if the owner is responding to almost all the posts in the thread I reckon that's going a bit far.

The restaurants of Hertford are benefitting from our decision to get our kitchen refurbished and consequently having no kitchen for several weeks. Lussmans was the beneficiary tonight. Pretty much up to standard with highly acceptable food. Slight gripe about the portion sizes, especially my treacle tart which was a slimmer's portion if that is not an illogical concept. I know I'm a greedy guts but it was £6 which seems a bit high for a sliver of tart plus a tiny dollop of clotted cream. And then, to make it worse, they added about £20 to the bill in error. To be fair, it was intercepted before we had a chance to comment so all in all we'd still include Lussmans on the preferred list.

went with friends to Lussmans last night... food excellent as ever. Waitress was a right grump.... and didn't help by delivering garlic butter for the steam 3-4 mins after steak had arrived.. and then the onion rings a few mins after that...

Thankyou, not 100% by the sounds of it. Would be good to know, some further info ie what night, where you sat and what time you came in and what you all ate so as to investigate further. Best to keep this direct via email if possible. My email is [email protected] ThankYOU.

Friday at half five for one, good pate, great fish and chips, wonderful creme brulee. Service was good.

Goodmorning, just a gentle update that Lussmanns in Harpenden opened yesterday. We have a lovely courtyard garden available as part of the original 18th century coach house. Can see more here, http://www.lussmanns.com/restaurants/harpenden-restaurants/ Thankyou

I didn't think advertising was allowed on here?

its a fine line, but updates and announcements about local businesses are allowed of course. More likely to be taken away for the locality aspect rather than the advertising aspect.

Personally I think that the owner of Lussmans does no favours at all to the forum by his tactic of making sure Lussmans is always at or near the top of the thread.

If you are saying my point is rubbish I beg to differ. The Lussmans thread has got 23 pages of comments. Andrei, who is presumably the owner of Lussmans, is shown as having made 64 posts on the forum. I wouldn't mind betting that most or perhaps all of those 64 are contained somewhere in the 23 pages of the Lussmans thread. If that is not classified as inappropriate use of the forum then I think the rules are too lax. Perhaps the three month gap that Steve mentioned is partly a reflection of the fact that the restaurant section is rather neglected these days. Maybe suffering competition from Trip Advisor?

Had an excellent meal at Lussmanns last night. It's the most consistent restaurant in Hertford - food, service and atmosphere always the best.
