Hertford from the air c1940
Not sure exactly what date this is it could be a lot earlier than 1940
am not sure if "The Green" had been cleared?
It is one of a series taken from the air to show German bombers their targets!
Just thought it was interesting as it shows quite good detail of how Parliament Square merged into Castle Street and the dog leg to West Street.
I find a lot of people can't quite remember how it was!
You can see Bailey Hall and a house that seems to be at the end of Queens Road, now under Gascoyne Way!
If you can get your bearings you can see the two houses that Peter Ruffles calls "Book ends" at the junction of West Street / castle Street and The Gladstone Arms now all gone for the dual carriageway.

Thanks for a fabulous photo.
It's ironic to think this photograph was taken with the intention of dropping bombs on the town but it reveals the far greater disfigurement done in peace-time by planners and the motor car.
How I wish I'd known the town back then.

Yes it does as so does this, a longer shot similar direction on an old postcard, no date but shows St Andrews on left and All Saints on the right so gives an even better idea of what a scar the road has made!

Not for profit Marilyn. If Paul the landlord wants to use iot he can I'm sure pay any copyright. But where did you get it? Presumably there is a specific site for the Luftwaffe photos. It has kept us fascinated down the pub for the last hour. A.d I would love a quality framed version at home

I got it from E bay but you can get an A4 from them direct I think http://www.coloptics.com
They say the do a limited number but I suspect that is a sales pitch. I had seen them before but not bought them, decided this time it came up it was a good addition to my album !

Ah now there's a thought.....................I could say the same for my grandfather who was about to buy a house behind Ware Road when the bomb dropped on it!
