Vintage Bus Rally
As I am no longer involved with events etc in town Admin should allow me to mention this. The Vintage Bus Rally is this Sunday (June 9) from the bus station at Bircherley Green. There are upwards of 20 vintage buses, all rides are free although you are encouraged to buy a programme to help costs and journeys go all over the area - some to places that haven't seen a bus since the days of Dr Beeching (!).
This was a cornerstone of Hertford Fun Day and back in 2002 we brought forward Fun day to co-incide with the buses. Even in recent years the Town Council organised a bus from town to the grounds. Great time had by all - kids love it as the buses are really a blast from the past. They run from about 9.00am until 5.00pm.
I am quite saddened to see so little advertising around the town for this. Not many towns get this sort of opportunity. There is a piece on the on-line version of the Mercury but I had to search hard on Google to find details as I remember the crowds that used to turn up in the good old days. If the sun shines buy an ice cream and imagine you are back in the 1950's.
And on another note which makes me even sadder - what has happened to Fun Day this year? I know it had to be staged within the Castle grounds and there are too many reasons why to mentioned here - but what happened?

Fun Day was introduced in 2001 after the annual carnival ceased. With the re-introduction of the carnival last year, Fun Day no longer takes place.

Appreciate this Steve but can't help thinking that this is a missed opportunity. In the years after 2005 Fun Day was organised by the Town Council in the Castle grounds. There were many reasons; some economic, some personal, some logistical why events did not take place in the town centre. But this years Carnival is run by Rotary and based outside the town on Hartham.
We have a Bus Rally this weekend, an open day at the Castle the weekend after and then the Carnival. All organised by different sets of people with boat trips along the river being run all summer. Somewhere in here is the basis for a 'Hertford Month' similar to what happens in Ware. Of course it isn't marketed as such but ought to be and I still think that if Ware claims July, Hertford should claim June.
On the other hand I am not at all sure who or whom could or can undertake such a task. There are many reasons not to do anything but that was always the way. As I have said to many people my old network has disappeared but I am ever hopeful that there is a will to do something, somewhere out there.

We had a great time today. Thank you to the very helpful man who helped our party (3 adults and 4 children) find a suitable route that wasn't too long for the young ones. Very enjoyable.
