Government "pay as you go" driving

If the government fully introduces if proposed pay as you go driving, it looks like Hertford would suffer from a higher "per mile" charge, as it is congested. As a resident, would you be happy to pay £1 mile to drive on the A414? How could you avoid drving on it? And do you think a charge would reduce the traffic? Where else would the cars go?

I live in Lower Bengeo and work in Hoddesdon, If this happens, I will resort to driving up Sele hill down the other side through Hertingfordbury and across country. How many other people will do this? I would imagine a fair amount. Chaos in the Country side!

The Labour Party discriminate against the poor again. When will the country wake up?

Yep, I will have to avoid the A414 and use the town and St Andrews Street instead. But if we all do this, will it become congested and then warrant a new higher rate of charge!? Could the bengeo rat run end up at the full £1.34 per mile?! [xx(]

I believe this is the basic idea behind the road charging - to redistribute traffic from congested roads onto less congested routes.

Fantastic idea, cars racing through the Country side! That would really be a great idea, especially as they are all built to take that volume of traffic.

I would like to know from anyone in Government what happens when our overseas visitors driver across the channel and use our roads, do they pay too????? I think this will cost us all a lot. I object to the fact that people have to work, without our taxes the Govt. wouldn't be in existence... aaah now there's an idea!!! Seriously, I want to know about visitors driving here from abroad, freight transport lorries from abroad and also our own (which I would like on railway thanks!) and more importantly, if we reduce our car use, the public transport we can use as an alternative that runs 24/7 and not stopping at 5.00pm as the buses do up to Bengeo!!! I would like total scrapping of Road Tax disc, which hasn't been said, only partial payment of it, so personally I think jolly motorist is being clobbered yet again, to pay for Iraq and we will see no improvement in existing roads, no better public transport oh and more speed cameras.. Who voted these idiots in???

I also object to this for the same reason I object to ID cards. When, if ever, has a Government led IT project come in on time, on cost. AND WORK. This will never work and will cost a bundle to develop.

And your solution would be what, exactly? Surely you can't seriously suggest that things are fine and they are and should be left untouched? What was that you mentioned about people being afraid of change on another thread? [;)] Thinking about it more, I'm not so sure that much traffic would be diverted on to quieter routes - surely people don't choose to use congested routes when there are alternatives available, suggesting that the vehicles on the congested routes don't have any alternatives. The clear country lanes are there for the taking at the moment, and I'm sure most of those than can use them do already.

Joby, this was the quote, "frightend of change, irrespective of weather it would enhance the local area or not" I dont think that loads of cars driving through villages like Brickendon and Bayford would enhance the area, do you?

No, I don't. However, as I said I'm not so sure there would be a big change as drivers already seek alternatives to the congested routes - I believe you yourself have advocated countryside/village routes elsewhere in this forum.

I shall be ditching my nice new car in favour of a 12 year old unregistered, un-MOT'd, uninusured Vauxhall Nova (complete with blue neon light on the underside of the front bumper & mega superboombastic ultra sub-woofer speakers on the back seats). I'll become one of today's chavs and stick my fingers up at the authorities and the street legal mugs.

Correct, I do have the choice to drive through the country side or along the A414/A10, or even though Hertford Heath. However, at present, I choose the quicker, straighter, faster, more economical route along the 414/A10

With respect to lorries ... I listened to a discussion on Radio 5 Live last week and road charging for lorries is a done deal (coming in, if my memory serves me right in about two to three years time). I presume because all lorries now have tachographs, they can use that technology somehow. The rep speaking for the haulage companies seemed remarkable sanquine about the scheme, he almost seemed to be looking forward to it.

So if all UK registered cars have a Sat Tracking device fitted (presumably at the drivers own cost), what about johnny foreigner when he comes across the channel in his car with no device - He will be able to get dirt cheap fuel etc. etc. Perhaps I should register my next car in poland or something.

Dear Jez My point a way back was do our foreign friends driving in our land pay. I am NOT paying for them, I will sell my right hand drive car and buy one registered abroad and drive that. If the Govt. try to veto that I will do as the French, say Pah a lot and wait to be put in jail, at HM Govt. pleasure, with a gym, onsite swimming pool, three meals a day and no washing up .. Oh and on the ID card bit, Spain has ID Cards, didn;t stop terrorism on the Madrid train 18 months ago did it??? Now do you think £100.00 ID cards a good idea.. Its another cash cow..

Lest you forget Victor and Drama Queen - ID cards were originally proposed by the Conservative Party back in 1996 by none other than one Michael Howard [;)]

Not bothered about ID Cards, as long as they dont charge through the nose for them. If you dont have anything to hide, why should you worry. I have another question, what will happen to all of the sales reps in the country? Will companies stump up all that money for then to use all the major roads?

Dude tried to tenuously link the issue with Hertford in his opening post. I was interested to see where it would go and if Hertford would feature in the responses. Unless someone would like to steer it back to a genuine local issue it'll be locked by the end of the week.

Thanks admin! I didn't want it to become a political arguement, but still , it great to hear all sides. I meant it to be a local issue. If the government (ANY govervenment) chose to charge for the A414 or A10. What would we do? Could you avoid using it? I can't see how any of us drivers can. With artery roads like those around Hertford, we can't avoid them. Should we pay a charge because of the sheer volume of outside commuters? In our area, we cannot travel east to west without brand new train lines. So, without a car, could you make these journeys in an acceptable time? On a seperate note... Drama Queen made an excellent point. What about foriegn cars? Could I drive an EU car on UK roads and pay no tax?

By the way Admin, without wanting to sound like a revolutionist. Its worth pointing out that this topic has created 85% of the new posts in the whole forum in the last three days. Don't cut it off if it what people want to talk about and it slightly on/off topic!

This is a Hertford related topic, as I can see the A414 featuring towards the top of the charging scale, due to the congestion during rush hour, I suspect that this will also put some outsiders off visiting Hertford to shop and socialise, due to the costs of driving and then parking, which will make the traders suffer (again). The Sat Nav Technology is not cheap, especially as these boxes fitted in cars will have to transmit some sort of id code, to charge. There has been no mention of whether the charges will differ to reflect the type of car being driven, currently we pay differing rates of Road Tax, based on the engine size and emissions. Interesting point about foriegn cars, I think i'm right in saying you have a set time period from importing a car from abroad to having to register it in the UK, LH Drive cars will cost you more on your insurance too. Hopefully a non labour future government will ditch this idea.
