I've just heard that the Stonehouse will also be applying for extended hours ie 1.00am Mon - Wed, 2.00am Thurs, 3.00am Fri, Sat and 12.30am Sun. Where does that leave Zeros now.

Every way i look at it i cant see how having bars open to 3am is good for anyone, from the obviously highly intoxicated (booze & class a)individuals, the mess in the town the next morning, the fighting/vandalism or the community as a whole. 1am i understand but 3am i dont.

It is not a problem on the Continent. Take Madrid for instance, their bars are open more or less 24 hoursand they do not have that trouble, what you find is people do not go out at 7.00/7.30 to guzzle as much booze as they can. However, obviously there will be the exception. It may even cut down on the amount of drunken bad behaviour from our holiday makers if they realise how to take things a little slower. Or is it another little change people are frightend of. Open your minds![8D]

I think alot is to do with differing attitudes towards drinking - the British (and Northern Europeans in general) are nations of heavy drinkers, whereas this is less true for Mediterranean countries. I think you hit the nail on the head, Victor, with your comment "guzzle as much booze as they can" - that's exactly the point, regardless of the time they have to do it in. I do not think that binge drinking is necessarily linked to licensing hours and have no problem with pubs opening longer and later.

I would agree with both Victor and Joby that much of the problem is about the British attitude to drinking. It is also down to the drinks companies pandering to the unsophisticated palettes of younger drinkers by offering alcopops and drinks made up by marketing people. It's also not helped by pubs like The Blackbirds who encourage binge drinking - see the large sign outside the door that says "reality is an illusion created by lack of alcohol".

With shift patterns changing now, people leave work late so what to many of us is an after work pint their after work pint is impossible with normal closing hours. We need responsible Managers/Landlords that will not serve those that can obviously drink no more. There is only so much that be consumed what ever the hour of day or night. Still the same number of Cops all be it too few

Pubs should be allowed late licences only if they are prepared to fund 'clean ups' or policing, licences should be quickly withdrawn for places that don't control their customers, ie refuse to serve obviously drunk people (I have never ever been refused a drink when I've been half hissed)

Thats a good point wingnut,ive been in a frightfull mess and been served,but then again im not load and violent.It just needs responsable staff.

oh great...more drunken, noisy B*****s walking past my door even later. You do not get continental style drinking patterns in full, standing room only pubs regardless how late they open.

Why doesnt the goverment levy an extra say 50p tax on all drinks served after 1am. Not only could the money be spent on policing at night etc but would make people think twice about excessive drinking.

I think there is already a government proposal for some pubs and clubs to contribute to policing costs... Problem pubs to get 'yellow card' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4193663.stm "Disorderly pubs will be given eight weeks to clean up their act before being billed for extra policing, under new proposals."

There are many pubs applying for late licenses now that they are able to. The Saracens Head on Ware road has applied and been told that he can have one until 1.00 on a Friday and Saturday but not a Thursday. However in this case I know conditions have been applied.... For example whatever the weather the doors and windows have to remain closed after 11pm and everyone has to be inside the pub, not sitting on the benches out front or in the beer garden. I understand the Woolpack is going for theirs as well. Does this mean that the Stonehouse, The White Hart and Zeros will now apply for 5am opening?
