As I was on that side of town today I went to Tesco for a change. Urgh big mistake why anyone shops in there I don't know cramped isles, few staff on shop floor and as for people on tills give me strength. Never again! I'm sorry Sainsburys I will not be disloyal to you again!

I don't mind the store much, it is ok but I just cannot face the car park. I hate it with a passion. I now use Sainsburys much more. I use local shops where I can but unfortunately not as much as I would like.

I disagree. I enjoy shopping at Tesco Hertford. I also like the way that there is a choice of exits out of the car park unlike Sainsburys which gives you no option. And they don't charge you to park.

I have always got a refund of car parking fee in Sainsburys even when I have only spent £5-6.

Tesco in Hertford is just a victim of its own success. It was for quite a while the most profitable store that Tesco had (£s per square footage of sales floor) ,it may not be now,plus there was no real competition. As for Sainsbury,I am not sure how they are surviving in Hertford. Whenever I go in there are more staff than customers and that is at peak trading times

sainsburys is a slow burner. At the start it definitely looked grave but recently there's been more and more cars parked there, and last time i was there it was positively busy, almost like a normal supermarket!

Anyone worked out which supermarket is cheapest yet? Sainsbury's always seems more expensive to me.

I don't agree. Everybody's shopping needs are different ie: some are shopping for a family with kids, some just two elderly pensioners some single people and are food requirements are very different. I love Waitrose as it stocks lots of brands in a small space .. Sainsburys (sorry steve) in a lot of things much more expensive than Tesco, and yes the Hertford branch is small and narrow, but I get so bewildered in larger places... too much of no choice.. I just walk out! I think there are merits to all, but I guess if I am honest I love Waitrose....and I think their customer service and help for community projects wonderful...

Tesco is cheaper than Sainsbury's on an overall shop unless it's Hertford Tesco which only seem to sell the most expensive brand of anything I tend to shop for !

tesco price their products in bands depending on local competition. So a tesco right next to an asda will be cheaper than one next to a sainsburys and waitrose. So historically because tesco hertford had no competition it was in the highest price band however i'd have expected the introduction of sainsburys in hertford to have reduced tescos hertford prices, perhaps only in time.

Codek2 is right about Tesco's area pricing - I remember this from my time working at Tesco Head Office in Cheshunt in the early 90s. At the time my department pioneered a Shopping Basket Computer system which allowed Tesco to base their pricing on other shops in the area. Retired Tesco Staff had the opportunity to top up their pensions by being mystery shoppers. They would go round Sainburys, Asda, Aldi etc with a computer print out (cunningly designed to look like a shopping list) and write down the prices of a typical shopping basket of goods. No one suspected dear old pensioners - they would phone in the prices - so that Tesco could rig their prices to match the competition in the area.

I've always enjoyed going to tesco on my way home from hertford east. But if I have to drive then I tend to go for sainsbury as it's a lot easier to park with my young ones.

Having just moved back to the area after a 12 year absence I find a Marks / Sainsbury combo the best option. Loads of good choices in M&S and all the regular 'stuff' in Sainbury.

When you factor in the Tesco Clubcard points, with the ability to exchange them for 4 times their value in certain restaurants, cinema tickets etc, Tesco are hard to beat. Nectar Card does not give anywhere near the same value. Also they are now doing price promise and therefore should be no more than Sainsbury's - provided you buy a minimum of 10 items of course.
