I am getting annoyed by the amount of cars and cyclists that drive the wrong way past the salisbury hotel.

Cyclists ARE allowed to go either way,I get annoyed at motorists who try to knock me off my bike or shout that it is a one-way street when they do not understand the highway code.

It's not the only place in Hertford where vehicles regularly ignore such signs. I'm think thinking of the unmentionable area just north of the town centre and Maidenhead Street for example. The standard justification tends to be "I pay my road tax so why shouldn't I be allowed to drive down here?" If there's anyone on this forum who is going to get upset about this one breaking of the Highway Code in Fore Street, just remember you can't pick and choose which aspects of it you follow.

Given the number of drivers who do this why not have a policeman pull drivers over and issue a fine (if applicable) and then publish the stats in the Mercury for all to see?

It's at this point I'll reiterate my idea of banning all motorised traffic (except buses and taxis) from St. Andrew Street (South) to Old Cross, Fore Street and Railway Street. Then build a bridge from the bus station to folly island for its residents.

i would have that road as an exit point ONLY with the entry point (to the town centre) being near Kwik Fit. i would then have left turn only on to Parliament Square. people wanting to turn right towards Mill Bridge would have to go to the roundabout on the A414 and back down. yes it might take you a minute or two longer but overall quicker still. Traffic can take forever to get out when trying to exit from Fore St to A414...also if a vehicle wants to turn right towards Mill Bridge can delay the flow somewhat too. just think one entry and exit point would help flow of traffic and stop people playing the 'i didn't know card'!!! would also stop snarling up when Marshalls have the big trucks delivering, you wouldn't get buses squeezing past as these trucks park on yellows...maybe even double yellows not sure? you would need some form of traffic furniture and curbs moved but for the greater good i think... would also close Bull Palin to cars. and change entry point to Folly Island to Thornton Street....cue angry residents....don't worry none of this will ever happen but thanks for reading :)

Donostia I was outside the Salisbury for about ten minutes a few Fridays ago and saw three cars take this route. However I think it simply reflects the generally poor standard of modern driving - coming home on my bike last night from Waitrose in a ten minute journey I had near misses with a motorist who went through a red light by M&S and a van driver who decided he didn't want to go to Tesco after all and went straight across the nearby lights from the filter lane. Its really not unusual to see poor driving around town but don't expect anything to be done about it. If you're bored any day hang around the roundabout by the East Station for some real excitement as its a bit like one of those traffic cop programs without the commercial breaks! The only action taken is if you happen to be passing the speed camera in Ware Road at 35mph (not me but Mrs G (who is a really careful driver who never exceeds the speed limit - allegedly)) - Ware Rd being a notorious accident blackspot and not just a cash cow for the council.
