Hope they catch the scum that did it - I find it appalling that someone wouldn't stop after hitting a pedestrian. Is it just me or do hit and runs seem to be happening more and more recently? Seems to have been some high profile ones in the Mercury this last year. Perhaps this is due to people seemingly being less and less willing to take responsibility for their actions nowaways.

Even if you were uninsured, drunk, driving a stolen car etc. the very least you can do is stop and check the person is ok/call an ambulance. If your need is such (and of course I'm not advocating such behaviour) you could still be out of there by the time the police/ambulance arrived.

Goodness whatever next? You and I would stop and get help/ambulance, but the person(s) who have committed this crime have a reason not to be caught or didn't know they had hit a person (which I think impossible not to know the nights are not pitch black in summer, you can see very well in Byde Street). Hopefully they will catch the person or persons involved...

There was an incident last year in Welwyn Road where a teenager was knocked off his bike and seriously injured. The driver got out of the car looked at him screaming in pain, then got back in the car and drove off. I know a bit more about it but can't comment as there is an ongoing court case. If I told you what I know you would be shocked.

There's more on this in last night's Mercury - it appears that the driver actually mounted the kerb in order to avoid having to wait for an oncoming vehicle to pass. This is a serious problem in lower Bengeo as drivers regularly drive along kerbs to avoid having to wait. I wrote to the council about this a couple of years ago after I had a near miss myself on the corner of Wellington/Nelson (where cars always seem to mount the kerb to cut the corner), this was to Sally Newton's predecessor, the late Councillor Frank Escott - in this specific instance I suggested a bollard on the corner that would stop the cars mounting the kerb without any reduction in parking spaces, he promised to raise the issue but I never heard anything since. Maybe now they need to think seriously about some measures to prevent this - I'll dig out my old letter and resend I think.

I am not quite sure how you can drive along the pavements in that part of Bengeo - they usually have cars parked on them. The actual problem in Bengeo is not just the "rat runners" (although it seems that some residents of Bengeo would like to think that it is). There is also the problem of the cottages in lower Bengeo were never designed to have any provision for vehicular transport. And yet every single house now seems to think that it is their right to park a car on the road right outside their house. Combine all these factors Narrow streets, saturation of parked cars and through traffic; what do you end up with? a problem. To solve it you need to look at the big picture not just locallised reactionary measures.

Jez, I lived on Wellington Street for 5 years - believe me people do drive along the pavements - all it needs is a few folk to have gone off to work to clear a stretch of pavement that will do nicely as an extra lane so I don't have to wait thank you very much. Incidently, people have every right to park on the street outside their own houses as long as their vehicle is taxed. That seemed an odd comment coming from someone like you who seems to think you have a right to do everything in a car (see your previous comments regarding speeding, rat-running etc.)

At the risk of offending both Jez and Joby no one has the right to park outside of their house. In the same road, close by, near or even outside if there is room. But it is not a right. You can park legally anywhere as long as your car is taxed. Hope that's what you both meant.

Parking is a problem in that area, I have a couple of pals that live in lower Bengeo and there seems to be pretty much a neighbourly code of conduct that lets you park outside your house, unless of course you happen to leave before and return after the people that park there for the station.

I had a similar property in Ware and we had the problems but again an unwritten rule of conduct and courtesy. When you buy a property like that you realise from the outset that parking will not be easy - it goes with the territory

I live in Bengeo, I actively avoid using the "back way" to Hertford North as its a) likely my wing mirror will part from my car body and b) I really cannot be bothered arguing against a "Chelsea Tractor" in confined space that neither they nor I can get through! I don't think its worth the hassle and at the moment, with all of A10 knocking back traffic all over the town, well I commiserate with the residents, but this is what this part of Bengeo is like... always has been [:(]

I don't know a lot about this "case" despite being a Bengeo lass.. but I get the impression that it wasn't a simple "mounting the pavement cos no room" sort of accident. Until the time of any court case/investigation takes place, maybe we're all barking up wrong tree. I was under the local impression there may have been more to this, but legal and other things are under wraps till more known......
