Taking into account posts from different topics recently I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of things to do/places to go in Hertford, be it in the sun or in the rain. Maybe taking into account things that you yourself do now, or things that you remember doing when growing up. What I'd really like is a list of things local kids could actually do if they put their minds to it! and hopefully some ideas for us all to use. My most recent activity in Hertford has been making use of the lee valley walk, well infact on bike. excellent exercise while enjoying what Hertford has to offer in terms of scenery, nature, fresh air etc... Also the path that goes from Hertford FC to Welwyn all offroad, again a great walk or bike ride.

I highly recommend the countryside pub crawl - start in town at a pub of your choice, then walk up along Mangrove Road and round the edge of Balls Wood to Hertford Heath for one in either the Jolly Pindar or the Silver Fox. Then back through Ball's wood and along to Brickendon for a swift one in the Farmer's Boy, followed shortly by a cheeky one in the Baker's Arms in Bayford. From there you can head to Newgate Street for another, or perhaps to the Candlesticks in Essendon, and finally on to the White Horse in Hertingfordbury, then back to Hertford (where I usually am forced, alas, to stop for a final quencher in the Millstream before heading up the hill home.) It should be stressed that only the walking bit of this is actually free [8D] unless you take your own drinks of course [;)]

Try also the nature reserve just off Sacombe Road to the north of Bengeo, I think there used to be some old mines or something up there but it's now managed as a conservation area. You can walk down into Waterford and back along the River Beane into Molewood.

Ride out through the country to Broxbourne stopping at the Farmers Boy for initial refreshments, then starting at the Crown of the river ride along the tow path back to hertford stopping at all the pubs on the way. (even though the Rye House is a bit of a hole)

Bengeo to The Woodman at Chapmore End is a good walk and my 4 year old managed it quite easily - bribed him with a packet of crips and a lemonade at the pub!

Used to do all the pubs on the Ware train, one each week on a Saturday evening when I was a kid, worked up to London and Back - great fun [:)]

In the summer the Mayor of Hertford is holding some "happenings" in the Castle Grounds in front of the Castle offices. On 16th and 17th July (sat pm and sun pm) there are some "Open Air Theatrical Melodramas" - provided by Hertford Dramatic and Operatic Society. Its free, BUT if you would like to donate to the Mayors Chosen Charity and HDOS's chosen Charity, that is appreciated!!! Yes its a plug but I was in them last year and we raised £500.00 split between Mayor's Charity and Isabel House Hospice, Welwyn.. [:D] I go and fly my kite on Hartham too!!!! For free

The Hertford Museum is free, and the theme change fairly regularly. Also an interesting garden at the back.

Failing that you can drive down there as all the woods have car parks.

Fete at Hertford Castle on Sunday afternoon (full programme on page 12 of today's Mercury) - a very English activity for your overseas visitors! Meets the criteria of things to do in Hertford for free as well!

Ewoower you have hit my point on the head, see BBQ gas post! So what advice do we give to kids out causing trouble through lack of anything else to do in Hertford. Looks like unless they have wealthy parents lining their pockets, they are forced to hang around on the streets etc... So next time I see a bunch of kids getting up to no good I can feel happy in the knowledge that they are only doing it as there is nothing better for them to do! Edited by Admin

Perhaps Mr Admin could start a "things to do" page split up by price/proximity/Age Suitability etc. Feeding the ducks in the Castle Grounds is free and good for younger children. In the hot weather you can go paddling in the river Beane around Hartham - still good fun for teenagers. What about cycling down the river to Ware.

A free family cycling treasure hunt will take place along the Cole Green Way next Saturday (21st August). You can start at either the viaduct near Hertford Town Football Club or at Bushey Leys Park in WGC, between 10am and 2pm. THere is a free prize draw and a goody bag for participants. This sunday (21st August) Castle Street will be closed to vehicles for a free street party from 12 noon til 4pm. It is a fundraiser for deaf children (can't remember the acronym. NDCF?)There will be a bar (courtesy of the White Horse) various stalls, music and entertainment.

There are parks with play areas by the Castle, another in Horns Mill, one off Cromwell Road, one in Bengeo and, of course, Hartham Park. Hartham has a play area, tennis, football, bowls..........

Returning, if I may, to the title of this thread, there is a Charity Day involving most of the businesses in St Andrews Street on Saturday 26 November. http://www.standrewstreet-hertford.co.uk/ There is a Da Vinci Code quiz, Morris men, car washing and various activities for kids, kicking off with a 'spot the odd item in the window' competition which is running already.
