Facelift for Hertford
Just read the article - should this not happen for the Hertford residents anyway and not just make an effort for the twinning celebrations.
We have discussed the weeds, anti-social behaviour etc. so why do they make a big drive on these just because of the celebrations - if they can do that now, they should do it all of the time [V]

I originally believed that the clean up was initiated because of Town Twinning but not so. Officer responsible heard of similar schemes around the country and all agencies were invited round the table to see what they could offer. It was thought that it would be ideal to work towards a certain date and Town Twinning ideal.
A lot of effort was put into Evron Place but not becaue of the twinning; police community and myself started this one in June of 2004 (last year) because of specific problems such as anti-social behaviour and the general run down appearance of the area which lent itself to all manner of dark and unnecessary actions. Hopefully with the cameras in place (paid for privately not Council or from ratepayers) and improved lighting (ditto) this should lighten up and improve the area.
BTW the council accredited officials were out in force yesterday hoping to catch people dropping litter. Not one warning was given. Says a lot for those people that live and work in Hertford. BUT ... take a look at about 4.00am on Saturday and Sunday morning. You'll never criticise cleansing dept again. And whose to blame? All those people you read about coming into town from other areas.

Its an amazing coincidence is it not that all this wonderful cleaning up happens now, despite many months of the conditions being bad.. AND we had the problem with weeds and other horrible things last year and nothing happened.. not in Bengeo at least. Guess we're "too posh" for council to bother with! Our town should be looked after and cleaned all year round, not just when Johnny Foreigner and his string of jewels of office comes riding in!! I smell a rat.. well a cleansed one anyway!

Yes it's an amazing coincidence, but can't you just stop moaning and just be happy that it's being done at all?

Drama Queen, an apology - I didn't intend my reply to sound quite as rude as it does - sorry about that. Don't know what came over me [B)]
I meant it to read along the lines of "let's just be happy that our town is being cleaned up, whatever the reason." [:)]
By the way, I'd be interested in hearing what your issues with Bengeo are - I live there and don't really have a problem with the way it looks (although in general I quite like weeds as they are often much prettier flowers, attract more wildlife etc. than stuff in folks' gardens - I do despair at the "sanitisation" of our open spaces.)
