Victorian Bengeo house builders
If anyone has any knowledge of who built the house they live in in Bengeo,I would love to know. Not the newer ones but the older Victorian, Edwardian ones.
I know there were some built by Darby, Green, Sheffield, Wray etc .
I don't expect you to put it on the open forum but hopefully you can send a private message on my profile.
I am researching the history of Bengeo for a project next year so any information about builders and dates would be helpful.
I know the earliest was the Port Vale/ George Street area then they worked their way up Port Vale, Balfour Street, Byde Street etc in the 1860's and 1870's. Wellington Street later, Fanshawe , Farquhar etc and Large villa's from the 1860's onwards mostly Eleanor, Parkhust etc from the 1880's and Bengeo Street at various dates from 1800 onwards.
I know a cottage in Waterloo Terrace has a date on it, are there any others I have missed?
I have the Bengeo Stories book and the museum info but wanting to expand on it.
Before anyone says it I am using the current Bengeo parish boundary to define what is and is not covered! So it covers Bengeo urban and Bengeo rural.
Grateful for any info

My house is far too modern for you (vintage but not yet antique) but included in the unenforcible restrictive covenants in my deeds folder I am not permitted to brew alcohol or carry out any religious practices not prescribed by the Church of England. I suspect before the the builder bought the plot it has, historically, belonged to McMullens and the Church?

Probably McMullens there was a lot of that put in deeds of houses on on their land!
Would still be interested in where you are and when it was built if you don't mind sending me a message. I was really meaning not the newer bits of The Ave round Cowper Cres. and The Wick etc. as that was one development I know all about ( I remember it as fields!), and I have the dates etc for the Revels Road / Parker Ave area.
I won't be able reply now till tomorrow if you do message me, off to a talk on the 1843 map of Tonwell.................should save me hours of research!

Thanks I had a rough date and knew they were later than the other side, they don't seem to be on the 1898 map so probably built late 1890's as no 1 is occupied in 1901 but no 3 isn't. Didn't know that was built by Ekins, as its semi detached I assume they built both?

I have an Ekins bill for a Mr Tyser (possibly the baker?) for work in Bengeo but wasn't sure which "Cottage" it refers to but now you have said that it may be Tower Street, what it details would make sense. That is dated contract Feb 1896, bill July 23rd 1896 but it does pin the date down if it is that cottage.

When we moved out of 1 Tower Street in 1983 we handed over the original deeds, Ekins bill etc to the Hertford records office at County Hall. My wife is pretty sure that the Ekins bill was dated 1896 so I think that we are talking about the same building

I found it at HALS so I think it is! Thank you and your wife for giving it to them so I could find it some years later! I know a bit about Mr Tyser the baker so that all adds to it.

I don't know if you get down Molewood Road but the pumping station is from 1888. Well according to Geograph.

Yes I have the history of that, mostly, it goes along with all the improvements on the water in Hertford and Bengeo and the mill that preceded it. It will feature next year! Going down there soon as I know someone who lives down there and has invited me to see his archive etc.!
