Road surfaces and noise
Is it just me - or can everyone in Hertford hear the constant noise from the traffic on the A414?
I think I read somewhere that roads in Europe are surfaced with a different material which eliminates road surface noise - anyone know any more? I might start a resurfacing campaign to return the peace.

You're right Newgirl - there are low-noise surfaces, but as they are up to three times more expensive than regular bitumen, our wonderful leaders don't see fit to install them most of the time. There are some on certain stretches of the A10 near Hoddesdon - you really notice the difference when you go over them. Also on the M11 near Loughton.
But most of the time we get the cheap & cheerful stuff, and it's easier to just blame motorists for the noise.
If you're worried about car noise, make sure they never fit speed bumps in your street -- these increase both acceleration noise and impact noise (noise of wheels bumping on ground) -- and also vastly increase pollution, c/o vehicles always being in low gear.
