Just come back from the Rhythms of the World festival of world music in Hitchin this weekend – an amazing atmosphere and very well organised. It’s the largest free music festival in Europe with 10 stages and over 200 acts on Saturday and Sunday. Is there any reason why Hertford doesn’t have such a big annual event, especially as we are lucky to have such a wide-open space with the Common? Surely if there is enough interest from both volunteers and sponsors this sort of thing will be a huge success. Why can't we organise something?
Reply ID 8508
Two words spring to mind. Health & Safety. Any more than 5 people being allowed to congregate together in Hertford will require the entire own centre being closed to traffic which means that the emergency services could not get through if someone fainted or if a cat got chased up a tree on Hartham Common.
Reply ID 8514
So how does Hitchin manage to stage such an event?
Reply ID 8516
Exactly Ewoowar. Surely all it takes is a group of enthusiastic and committed individuals to come up with creative solutions of the constant barriers put up by the bureaucrats. I would have thought that Hertford is crying out for an annual festival and it would be well received by everyone.
Reply ID 8524
Hertford doeshave an annual music festival but it is not on the same scale as Hitchin and does not cater for the same musical tastes.

The purpose of my posting was not to say someone should do something to organise such an event but to see what objections and obstacles that have prevented others from doing this in the past. There must be a reason as to why Hertford doesn’t have such a big annual event and why other events have stopped in recent years. Can these things be overcome?
Reply ID 8528
I think an annual festival in Hertford is a fantastic idea, I cannot see why it would be more of a problem in Hertford than anywhere else. I am sure if someone got the ball rolling, and volunteered to start this, there would be no shortage of people to help.
Reply ID 8530
Bring it on !! There are enough people in Hertford who would love to organise, support etc something like this. The question is how do you go about it? Any one know ?
Reply ID 8533
Step 1: propose an idea on a respected local forum, get people talking about it, listen to objections and ideas, proceed to step 2
Reply ID 8534
Any suggestions as to the theme?
Reply ID 8535
I guess we are talking about a mainly music based event. So if Hitchin has the "World" scene Hertford would proabably need to look elsewhere for one. Blues and Jazz sounds good to me .
Reply ID 8538
Blues & Jazz? That's me out of it then.

A music festival, which is just one particular type of music I would have thought, is too restrictive whereas an international musical festival, which covers ALL types of music, will appeal and attract people from all walks of life, young and old. Is there any reason why you couldn’t have several outside stages playing different music across the town? The idea of introducing an annual festival to Hertford seems too obvious to me for this not to have already been considered by others, so what has stopped them OR is there something already in the pipeline?

Had a great time in Romsey (Hampshire) at their Beggars Fair which was Friday evening and all day Saturday. It is their music festival. There were various venues throughout the town, from the pubs, the market place to King John's House, inside and out. Each venue had a timetable of different folk groups, singers, musicians, bands etc., throughout the day and a half. This way, everyone can plan where they want to be and who they want to see and no one venue has to stage the festival. There were groups playing in small marquees in the car parks of local hotels, gazebos in pub gardens, on the back of a lorry in the market square and in the open air where ever they could. Advance programmes were on sale for 50p and all the entertainment was free. Pubs put on barbeques, pig roasts etc., to cover any expenses. There was even a carnival procession! To my mind this could be achieved in Hertford. Down there it is run by a committee of volunteers from all walks of life, not by the councils or any musical organsations. If there are enough willing people out there to enable this to happen in Hertford, stand up and be counted. I for one would be willing to get involved together with my partner.

I could not let this post pass. Whilst waiting for my wife in hospital I read of the two week Baldock Festival which is full 14 day programme of low cost events so ... I am in the very early stages of planning a similar Mayfest in Hertford as during that month there is already the Music festival, the Art Society exhibition, Theatre Week and in the last Sunday the Vintage Bus rally. I think I can also get funding through the Arts programme. All it takes is that when i go very public and ask for volunteers, help and organisers everyone puts one foot forward. Last, the first question i asked Mrs Sloop on Saturday morning was - if Hitchin can get away with shutting virtaully the whole town off for a weekend why can't i? Answers on a postcard. I can overcome most obstacles bar one - access to Folly Island!
Reply ID 8557
Why was Folley Island access made to be through the town centre and not through Harthams and over the weir? If it was that way round, there'd be no problem (and less of a problem on Saturdays, etc.).
Reply ID 8560
As far as I am led to belive, Folly Island was a burial ground for the plague victims. They were brought up the river from London. I guess at the time of the plague, Hartham park was just grasing land, therefore the sensible route in at the time would have been through the town.
Reply ID 8563
Give me a wink when you need the help, sounds very interesting and certainly something to be part of. I hope the majority of forum members will feel the same as afterall we all share a common interest in Hertford and this can surely only be seen as a good thing?
Reply ID 8564
I agree. It takes a "Can do" attitude to get these things off the ground rather than a "won't do it". I would love something like this in the town.
Reply ID 8568
I am no longer Chairman of the Folly Island Association and would rather not get bogged down in talking about the reversal of traffic flow again. It would solve many problems if access to the island was closed at the Barge and Thornton Street opened up. However I think that particular item is currently permanently on hold, if not shelved along with the enhancement of Bull Plain.
Reply ID 8573
All sounds good mr Sloop . Please keep us posted.
Reply ID 8574
I went to the Isle of Wight rock festival in June - the whole thing takes place on school fields - no need to close a town centre - and they had shuttle buses running between the site and the ferry port. A festival in Hertford could follow similar lines - encourage any non-Hertford revellers to arrive by train rather than car and ship them to and from the site, encourage those within walking distance to do so, and that should leave enough parking space in and around town for the rest.

Solution to the ongoing problems about shutting down the town and the obvious headache this causes the organisers – make use of the vast amount of space down at the Common. Surely what Hertford needs, is not more low cost miniature events diluted over several days or weeks, but a big annual festival which will attract people from outside the area – something to really put Hertford on the map, although I think something on the scale of a Knebworth Concert is a little too ambitious.

quote:I think the closing of Thornton St. was relatively recent. As sloopjohnb says, reopenning may not happen in the reasonable future which is a shame. The big shame was that the Thornton St. closure was made permanent rather than with removable bollards, as this could mean that it could be opened up in emergencies or at times when the town centre was to be closed. Anyway, I guess that as that's not an option, it's not worth pursuing. It does however bring to mind another suggestion. For the duration of the festival, the residents could be given (part of) Hartham car park to park in so that they had vehicular access (they'd have to walk in via Thornton St. rather than their normal car park). Then as long as a quickly opened route through Bull Plain was kept free in case of emergency access, the town centre could be closed to general traffic. Finally, it may be worth talking to the people in Stevenage town council as they have a similar problem every year when the fair sets-up in the Old Town.

I might be able to answer some of your questions here, having contemplated organising such an event myself. Firstly you need money and lots of it! Ok so you could charge for tickets but you would need to control it, how do you control a large open area such as Harham or the Castle Grounds?? You could put up fences and have people guarding the etrance and exit?? but don't forget this is also going to cost you more. Next you have to have the set up (PA, Speakers etc, Lights, Stage, Power to the field, registered doormen, trained first aiders.......and on and on!) try getting volunteers in the music business, I can tell you now it is impossible! You will also need to make sure you have your entertainments licence, your liquor licence and approval from the council. More money and a lot of hard work![V] If anyone is really mad enough to actually have a go at this, I will offer my services for free.....for what it is worth![:)]
Reply ID 8643
Thanks for that Nicky – all things definitely worth taking on board. You say you contemplated organising such an event, what stopped you? Do you personally think its possible to overcome the many obstacles? Do you think there is enough interest in Hertford to stage such an event? Should you, shouldn’t you, charge – to attract enough interest I would have thought it would have to be a free festival with the money raised through sponsors, advertising and grants, the sale of merchandise and programmes, cash donations and any income from the stalls and bars. I have managed to get hold of the income and expenditure for the Rhythms of the World Festival in Hitchin and its not going to be cheap, even a festival which is half the size – for example over £18,000 was spent on Health & Safety, £4,500 on Police costs. The stage and lighting was £18,000, this is without taking into account publicity, insurance, artist costs etc, etc– are there enough businesses in the Hertford area to sponsor such an event? Whether I’m mad to start this – to be honest I’m not sure. What I do know I’m really keen to see Hertford have an annual festival that everyone is proud of. I appreciate that a lot of real hard work has gone into organising other festivals and events in Hertford in the past but there is currently no big annual event, which is staged year on year for everyone to look forward to – perhaps this is telling me something!

I tried to organise an event at the Castle some years ago but met with sufficient resistance from the Town Council to lead me to believe it was not wanted. They were too sceptical. Despite my assurances they seemed to treat me with distrust and were questioning my motives.
Reply ID 8646
It's best to let these events grow organically. For example, the beer festival that was held in the castle grounds in 2002 had quality folk acts too, and this could have then developed into more of a folk festival. It's easier to get sponsorship for events if they already have a following, and easier to then switch to bigger venues if required. Incidentally, Admin, I am amused to note that I feature in one of the beer festival photos on this page! Are you stalking me?! http://www.hertford.net/pictures/beerfest.htm

Worth mentioning here, (although I may start another thread on this), is the "Rock At The Castle" event which takes place on Sunday 7th August in aid of the Isobel Hospice. Featured acts include Black Cab, 3D Echo, Funkify, Twisted Covers, The Runners and Nuala O'Halpin. Includes Bar and Food. Arranged in conjunction with The Hertford Marquee.

Try and give you all a bit of an overview on this. However, as much as I am delighted that I haven't had to run a Fun Day this year, it is a huge loss to the town (giving me a slight dose of paranoia) and a hertford festival has been talked about by a number of people. This board helps to support any involvement of council etc.

I think a festival involving music is a great idea but there are other themes. Hertford is full of history but we make no use of it. The castle would be a great setting for a day with an historical theme. There is evidence of over 2000 years of occupation in Hertford and each of these periods could be covered. Tied in with the local schools and education authority and organisations such as East Herts Archaeological Trust there is a possibility to organise something very different for the town.

Fair point, Ewoowar, but it doesn't really sound like that would pull in the crowds in the way a music festival would. Just too dull to anyone other than those interested in that kind of thing (e.g. I wouldn't go even though I live in Hertord.) Not saying at all that your suggestion shouldn't be done, just maybe not as the town's flagship event.
Reply ID 8660
Hey Joby! You jumped in before I could get there! In answer to Ewoowar... Most British towns have evidence of 000's years of occupation. And the trouble with tying in schools is that everything then tends to be low budget and only appeals to very local people who have a Little Herbert taking part. I am not particularly interested in seeing kids dressed as Ancient Brits, unless they are my own. An historic festival on a larger scale would probably need to include such things as jousting or battle re-enactments, and there's not enough space in the castle grounds for these. And getting local groups involved in public events that require any amount of preparation is very difficult - look what happened to the carnival floats. Are we not talking about a festival that would really put Hertford on the map? Something more professional that would appeal to more than just school-age families in the town? How about a Literary Festival? That could include story telling for all ages, visiting authors, actors that have played famous literary parts, creative writing workshops etc.

quote:I agree completely. A flagship event it is not. But it would be new to the town and add variety. I think a flagship event has to be centred on a major activity or music festival. But events in the town should not be limited to this. If we don't dare to try to do something different we will end up with the standard events accompanied by burger stall concessions. I also think that the Castle is not the right venue for a flagship event. It does not have the capacity. The last fun day was a good example of this. It was a victim of it's own success. The previous year was good so the attendance at last years event was incredible and made it uncomfortably packed. With no controlled access to the Castle grounds the area can become dangerously full. The Castle is perfect for smaller events such as the twinning fete, Rock at the Castle, etc. Also, families with younger children would be more likely to attend an event with historical activies in a Castle than a rock concert. And there are plenty of these in Hertford, hence the success of Fund Day.

Have regulations etc been tightened up in recent years? There used to be a County Day on Hartham Common years ago. That had a (large) fenced off area and charging for entry. It must have been quite a while ago, because one of its prime attractions (for some of [:)]) was a beer tent in the days when pubs closed during the afternoon.

Rock At The Castle sounds good (although not my type of music, will still try to attend for the atmosphere and to support a local event and a great charity) – in conjunction with the guys down at Marquee you know that this is going to be good. Have I been walking around Hertford with my eyes shut though as the event is only next month and I haven’t seen anything advertising for this until now. I totally agree with your comment Nora that the event has to grow organically, but it seems to me that a lot of these small events run for a couple of years then disappear (although there is obviously a sound reason for this). The current Hertford Music Festival is a good start but isn’t this an indoor event?

Nora..... Yep, plenty of towns with a long history........but not many with a castle smack bang in the centre. Hertford is a town with a good sense of history, hence the 'Pride in our Past' part of the Town Council motto. And these sort of events are not about wheeling out 'Little Herbert' dressed as an ancient brit for their own immediate family to coo at. And jousting?!?! Have you been watching 'Knight's Tale'???? I'm not suggesting an extravaganza along the lines of the events at Warwick Castle. I'm not suggesting a full scale re-enactment of the Battles of Hastings or Trafalgar! I'm talking about having an event that is relevant to the town and the venue. Furthermore, it would be nice to see an event that is family orientated yet not dependent on bouncy castles, motorized go-karts, burger concessions and 'hook the duck', however much fun they are. Having attended, participated in and helped to organise such events in the past I have a clear understanding of what is possible within the castle and how it can be linked to the town. Otherwise the town motto may as well be, "couldn't give a toss about our past". And by the way, I also think the other ideas suggested are good. I'm not fixed on my own little idea.

Two years ago, the local Rotary clubs used Hartham to run a centenary car rally. A large area had to be fenced off and public access was restricted to each end of the common so that entrance money could be collected. All the stewarding was done on a voluntary basis, of course, by the rotary clubs, as was much of the rest of the organisation. Attendance wasn't as high as hoped and some things could have been done better but all in all it wasn't a bad effort.

Food, Alcohol and Music – the essence of life. Some great ideas coming through and I agree with those people who are calling for a real crow puller, a flagship festival. Surely we should be putting other towns in Hertfordshire to shame not the other way round. There are plenty of businesses in and around Hertford who we can call upon to sponsor such an event and by the looks of it plenty of willing volunteers.

Not wishing to dampen anyone's enthusiam for this project but as someone who has been part of the organisation team for 4 Fun Days, 2 medieval nights and one switching on of xmas lights, never underestimate the amount of work that has to go into organising even the smallest event. On the brighter side and without being too vain about it I am one of few people in Herford that know all the right buttons to push and all the right people to know. Those who remember Hertford County Day on Hartham will recall it with find memeories. However it went down the pan over loss of revenue and two bad summers. East herts will charge for use of hartham, the area has to be made safe and secure and Hartham Lane closed to traffic to allow for emergency vehicles. If you look as Hartham Lane you will notice that each end only has pavement on one side; this is not good for crowd control. And what you need in abundance, free is possible is voluntary help, stewards etc etc. It took Rotary two years and most probably more to organise their car rally and still there were problems. However there appears to be a strong feeling towards a festival and an embryonic festival committee. I am happy to draw this together and will organise a room somewhere - if Black Horse happy to provide this even better and I will try and lever some funds for snacks. Then all who have posted here cna meet and see if this festival has legs. Do not expect too much from local businesses in the way of funding or sponsorship - there are a few who do dig deep; but such an event will get the support of Arts Funding and if prepared properly even Lottery Funding. So, good news, bad news. Something to chew on. If anyone wants to get in touch please email me at repliesatjohnbarber.com. I am busy with meetings until wednesday so may not reply in full until then. In the short term I think an intial meet is more essential and if Black Horse appears happy to host then Rooster please contact me.

However, any large event also needs the full backing of the Mercury. Will elaborate next week. This was before the subject was raised here but it featured in my future plans for town centre. Unfortunately Hertbeat is as strapped for cash as anyone else but never lacking in enthusiasm. I have worked with them before and if we can help with the cash flow they will pay back with interest.

And i would just like to add that the number of hits on this thread has shot through the four figure mark in a very short space of time which must show that there is a considerable amount of interest being shown.

I wouldn't get too excited about the thread statistics. Only about 15 different people have posted and it's been totally dead for 48 hours. You can see from other threads that even dull and trivial topics can grow to several pages and demonstrate an impressive number of hits. This website's forums are characterised by a small, vocal group of contributors who (and I don't know whether to envy them or pity them for this) have nothing more important to do than log on night and day, make multiple posts and hit a thread over and over again to keep checking who has replied to their post. This pushes the stats up. I know I am a very negative person, but I am convinced that this festival, as envisaged in this thread, will never happen. You need more than good wishes and ideas. You need people - lots of them - who will put to one side their families, hobbies and paid jobs to spend hours on the phone canvassing sponsers, walking round local businesses, project managing, sorting out legal stuff about parking, liability, music and alcohol licensing... as other people have said in this thread, it's a huge project. However, prove me wrong and I'll be delighted, in fact I promise to provide the festival with a between-acts diversion as I publically eat my hat, or maybe some humble pie!

I assume Rachel, that by your remarks you will not be joining us at the meeting on Thursday! [:(] Man walking on the moon was once a vision of only a few people!

Wow Rachel you are really positive arent you about the community you live in and events that go on!!!! How do you know that these folks arent prepare to put the time and effort in to orgainsing such event. By the way you have written your post you seem to know what needs to happen to orginse such event, so why dont you meet up with them on Thursday. I would go along and offer my support but i dont have a childminder.

Those who have expressed an interest may never get this thing off the ground but I applaud all of them for their positive attitude. Without that nothing will ever happen. If an attempt to organise such an event fails 99 times out of a hundred then the 1 time it makes it it is stronger and better because of all the attempts that went before. Come on Rachel.

Rachel, the concept of a completely free Hertford Fun Day was the dream and initiative of just one person - Jonathan Burge. I know just how much energy and time he put into this. But he got the momentum going and is no longer in Hertford ... and but for other external pressures Fun Day would still be going. You should know more than most how many people sit in the corner of the sung bar and say 'something should be done about x or y.' Most of them never get off their collective backside. The fact that there are new faces out there willing to do something says much for them.

I'll be along to this meeting, if I may. I don't know what I can add organisationally, but I do have a contact in the indie music scene who could potentially get some bands in from Sheffield, West yorks, London etc. Depending on what sort of music you're interested in, of course (though I'd have thought a mixture would be good). There's a mixture of signed and unsigned bands, and he said he'd there'd very likely be interest.

Shame you have to be so negative about it, although your negativity seems more rooted in your frustration that people don't use this forum in the way you think they should. From what I know of you and your music knowledge, it sounds to me like you could add much to the meeting this week - if only to counter-balance to our wild optimism and add a touch of realism. What say you? [8D] p.s. not so convinced by your festival recommendations - went to kalaidascope on Saturday and - apart from the bongo man and the chip pan fire demonstration - it was completely pants [:(]

I will be at the meeting on Thursday but to be honest, I'm such a mardy cow that I think I'd be more use to the community babysitting for GillP so she could come. I suppose I can be the Bad Fairy, sitting there hissing bile and pouring cold water on everyone's enthusiasm. Please note I did not recommend the Welwyn Kalaidoscope festival, I merely pointed out that it was on and lessons could perhaps be learned from it. I'm sorry I missed it now, though... a chip pan fire demo? it doesn't get any better than that. And can we book the bongo man to accompany my hat-eating? [:)]

Well folks it's ALL SYSTEMS GO!! We had an extremely productive meeting tonight and have agreed on an event in early June 2006 which would cover Friday evening, Saturday all day and evening and a family day on the Sunday coinciding with the old bus rally in Hertford. We have booked another meeting for Thursday 18th August 8 pm for 8.30 pm at the Black Horse to decide who does what. If you are interested in getting involved in anyway, however trivial it may seem, please attend and show your support. We need workers from now until the end of the event. Oh yes! We also need a name for the event. Any suggestions? Bring them along to the meeting on the 18th. In the meantime, think about what can be done. Do you have any musical contacts? Children's entertainer contacts? Do you know any face painters? Clog dancers? anything can be considered. Start talking to people and get feedback. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the support so far. We are about to make Nicky's dream come true!! And as for Rachel WILL BE EATING HER HAT In fact Rachel is with us all the way. [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Sorry I couldn't make it - I had a late call at work (had to talk to someone in California), and with the trains being hourly, I didn't get back in time. I'll try and make the next meeting, but as I say I have contacts in the indie music scene, so let me know if you're after any of that "sort" of music.

Thank you Tony and Linda for the free pint and sandwiches (much needed!). I am glad the evening came to some conclusion and very sorry I sneaked out a bit early. What I think we also need to establish here (unless it was discussed after I left) that even though the plan is to form a commitee we need an organ grinder! not sure how everyone else feels but Tony seems to have the experience in these things and was very good at managing the meeting??? Also when asked (and it will happen when local papers get wind, and we start contacting businesses for sponsorship) are we going to say it was organised by the people of Hertford.net or just a group of local people???? I was a bit concerned that it was heading towards being organised by Hertford Town Management Group which we are obviously not.....? although their help will be very much needed and appreciated! I am sure we can discuss all this further.....as mentioned in the meeting I will contact the people I mentioned who would be very helpful should they be interested in helping!

Susanne at the Castle is interested in asking Council to do what they can and will most probably come to next meeting just to listen in the first instance. Personally I am really pleased that there are many new faces and more importantly young new faces out there willing to put some time and effort into the town. And please can I assure Nicky that the HTCMB has no intention of running the event. I am mostly what is left of it and after so many years I am absolutely delighted to be able to pass on some if not most of the running around etc to others. But willing to oil the wheels so to speak as far as obtaining some of the permissions that need to be extracted like a bedded in rusty nail out of the beaurocratic machine.

Update. We now have a core of people who are starting to plan this event. It has been named The Hertford Pudding Fayre (after the Hertfordshire puddingstone) and will take place on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoon the first weekend of June 2006 (2nd, 3rd & 4th). It will combine music, dance, storytelling, children's entertainment, Fun Day and vintage busses in a number of venues in and around the town. What we need now is to hear from those of you who want to get involved, not necessarily organising but assisting where and when needed. If you are prepared to help, please email [email protected]. And don't worry that you think you do not have any skills to help. You all do [:)] Thanks

If there are any more willing citizens of Hertford who wish to get involved with The Hertford Pudding Fair which will take place at the beginning of June 2006, there is another meeting on Monday, 5th September starting at 8.30pm at The Black Horse in West Street. We still need a treasurer if there are any accountant types out there willing to give their time to this event. See you there. [:o)][:o)][:o)][:o)]

Wow I’ve been impressed with the progress made since I first made the posting questioning why Hertford doesn’t have an annual event. Unfortunately whilst, I applaud the enthusiasm from everyone, I still fear (and I mentioned this to Linda) there seems to be far too much input on the direction of the event from Hertford Town Management/Council. Whilst their contribution is no doubt valuable (although previously been negative towards others wanting to organise something as mentioned by Ewoowar before in the forum), unfortunately their immense hard work over the years to bring an annual event to Hertford has continually been unsuccessful or so it seems. Again from what I’ve read this seems to be heading the same way by utilising at the suggestion of Hertford Town Management/Council what to do and how to do it and who to involve with the same ideas and suggestions which have failed to draw in the crowds in previous years. I really hope you guys make a success of this and prove me wrong. Good luck!

Darryl - I think you ought to be aware of the following. Hertford County Day was literally washed out after two bad years with weather. It was replaced by the Carnival but this too faced organisational problems. Back in 2000 Jonathan Burge then chairman of the Hertford (not shire) Chamber of Commerce had the idea of a Fun Day that was to be completely free. The main financial contributors to this were the Hertford Town Centre Management Board who put in at least £1000 plus unpaid time from its members; £1000 from Hertford Town Council, ditto time and a further contribution from Waitrose of £500. In one year we obtained funding from the lottery. That was the sum total of input from the town. It raised funds for Isobel Hospice and the Mayors charities. Volunteers for road closures, stewards and marketing came from committee members, and put upon family and friends. Go back over the pages of the Mercury every year and you'll see requests for volunteers. No one comes forward. The last Fun Day came down to me, Rosemary Harris the town clerk and after a illness Susanne Mead at the Castle. There was plenty of editorial support from the Mercury and Bob Richmond, governor at Richard Hale was instrumental in a lot more happening. That is why there is no more Fun Day - there is no more committee after I resigned. So I have the utmost respect for Tony and Linda at the Black Horse for organising the Pudding Fair. They deserve everybody's support. It is good to see that the people who turn up are young as well and have expressed great enthusiasm. I have no interest in organising this - nor has the Hertford Town Partnership - there is no money in the kitty either. Nor has Susanne at the Castle. What we are offering is a huge amount of experience of running events in town and knowing who to approach and where the buttons are to push. From my own personal viewpoint - it is Tony and Linda's vision but I have been mentioning this around Town, District and County concillors and business people. It has caught the imagination. Whether this will be translated into hard cash remains to be seen. As Ewoowar says, it is up to you to change the direction of how things are run in this town - if you are that interested in doing so.

What I wanted to add before the fire alarm went off was that back in 2000 when there was a huge problem getting home through Medieval Night for Folly Island residents, Jonathan Burge and I had an amicable discussion and he finished by saying that if I wanted to change things that much then I should join the Fun Day committee, which I did. What resulted was a Fun Day built around a vision that Maria Leone (Susanne's predecessor) and I had for a music based day with two main sites - the Castle grounds and Salisbury Square. Which is what happened. Then we moved the date to co-incide with the Vintage Bus Rally. The moral of this story is that you can change things - but you have to get off your backside to do it.

when is the Pudding Fair, where is it and is it literally a dessert-tasting frenzy?
Reply ID 15399
The Pudding Fair is, and I quote "A taste of arts & entertainment for Hertford". It will take place on the 3rd & 4th June 2006. The festival, named the Hertford Pudding Fair after the geologically unique local pudding stone, will incorporate music, storytelling, literature, cuisine, dance, street theatre, and art. In fact anything at all that celebrates life, entertains and amuses. That's from the website http://www.puddingfair.com Now here's the thing. Planning is well under way but we need people who will commit to help running the event. We need people to organise staffing and marshalling especially on Sunday, to get programme advertising, to "stage manage" each area (Birchley Green, Parliament Square, Salisbury Square, Maidenhead Street) and to contact and manage music venues. If you are prepared to help make Pudding Fair a success then please email [email protected]
