I couldn't beleive this when I first heard it, but Tesco's are taking out their delicatessen at the end of August. Apparently it's to "improve their range".

That's Teasco all over. The decision is taken in order to improve profits. Instead of the deli they will sell products that achieve greater revenue from the space. I wish they would just be honest. Tesco could say they were locking the doors to improve access and expect their subjects (ooops, I mean 'customers') to swallow it.

It is a business and a very successfull one at that, unfortunatly that means that they are always going to do what suits them in order to make greater profit. What we really need is a private deli in town. I noticed that the bakery on Ware road outside where Focus is has shut down too!

Improve what range! To be honest since LittleP arrived we dont shop at Hertford Tescos as there baby section is pitaful. Personally i think they will lose alot of custom

The bakery is a Pearces shop which has recently mde many redundencies which includes closure of some of the shops. A deli in town would be great and probably well used. Back to small enterprise[:)]

I think it is great news that Tesco is closing a department. Fantastic news. It means there is an opportunity to open a good deli in Hertford.

Perhaps it's a good sign that they are having to close their deli - does it mean that the good people of Hertford are starting to buy their delicacies elsewhere? I have often wondered how the revenue of the big chain stores would be affected if we had a "Shop Independently" day, or even week. If only half of Hertford's population took part it would be a huge boost to local businesses and a good awareness excercise.

Hertford Tesco lost it after the last revamp a few years ago when although the shelf capacity had increased , the range reduced considerably. Probably in an attempt to "improve their range" even then. Agree that the organisation is probably the most successful in the UK (& abroad) but some of ther stocking policies, determined by which type of store is felt best for us, are annoying. That is bad enough but the Hertford store seems particularly poorly run. How can’t you have essentials on the shelves, in normal trading, when you (presumably) have a just in time stocking system? The system has done all the work for you , you just have to move it a few feet from the stockroom to the shelves! (Seem to remember at least a couple of folk on the forum have a good knowledge of this perhaps they could help..?) If our store was typical of the business as a whole Tesco would have crashed & burnt many years ago…. Waitrose for me methinks …. (with Lidl at Welwyn for cheap tins & stuff) & yes maybe a local deli - if it could get the location right this time & of course the best location (namly the begining of Railway St) will costa fortune in rent & rates - too much for what a Deli could be expected to afford

Yes - current temp manager is there until Sept. Ive always thought it was expensive to have 3 or 4 people standing behind those counters serving. Dont get me wrong, i prefer it, but i thought it would only be a matter of time before they bully the suppliers into packaging it up and making us pluck it off the shelves ourselves. I think no chain wants to be the first to remove it completely, Aesthetically it appeals to customers, even if a lot dont use it.

I use the deli quite often. I would have thought it would be better to close the fish and meat counters as I'd have thought they don't get used as much. Closing the fish counter might also hand back some business to the fish shop in Railway Street.

They changed the deli last Autumn and its not nearly as nice. It also started to sell a lot more heavily processed foods and so it was not, for me anyway, something I wanted to buy. I would welcome a private deli, but will continue to shop in Waitrose and Sainsburys in Hoddesdon.. I think our Hertford Tesco is badly stocked for a 24 hr store. Don't open 24 hrs if you cannot supply bread, potatoes or milk and this happens a lot.. I will go elsewhere definitely, the experience in Hertford is not great !

As far as I know only the deli and fresh meat counter are closing. There aren't any notices up about it but staff and head office have confirmed it. I wonder if they bothered with any market research before taking this step? I can't think of any other major supermarkets without deli counters.

They don't need market research. They look at sales figures. They condition their subjects into buying what delivers the best profit for them. It is not all about understanding customers as some people would have us believe.

If you want Butchers Meat, go to a Butchers (Sele Farm or the Avenue) If you want deli stuff go to the deli on the Avenue. Everyone keeps harping on about using independant retailers. Now you have no excuse. The Butchers in Sele farm is excellent. Use them, stop windging that Tescos are closing down there crappy deli and Butchers counters. Hopefully they will shut the crappy fish counter as well. There said my piece!

Apparently they did have some signs up in the store but Head Office told them to take them down because they were generating complaints!

Rubbish. It is simply used by such a small minority, why should they keep it open? If the Hertford public used it so little, Tesco don't bother. Yes, Tesco are a money machine. They don't keep it open because the not enough people use it. Why do people have a problem with that? It it was Botsford, you would all be out in sympathy, claiming it it shame no one uses it. Why should Tesco be any different? Tesco chase the sale. Use it, and they will come. The Deli closing is not Tesco's fault. Its the majority public that stop using it.

I would certainly support this, and I speak to a lot of people who say that if possible they always shop locally to support local businesses.
