Wont make much difference, the worst drunks are the young inexperienced drinkers who are generally bottom over bossom [:p] by 9/10pm and causing trouble anyway. Due to the need for licenses to be renewed it would make sense to apply for a late license, why wouldnt you? Even if your establishment has no plans to make use of extended hours regularly, they will have the option there should they wish to for an occasion of some sort etc...

The environment would still need to be appealing. If the establishment was full of bawdy drunks at 01.30 then I would not want to enter it.

Basically the late licenses do away with the need to apply for special late night hours licenses on Bank Holidays, Xmas Eve, News years eve etc. So if someone wants to open till late or close early they can. Most licensees in town would not want to work past 2.00am anyway and if they do, they have to pay extra staff etc etc. I enjoyed a lock in as much as the rest and doing so legally just takes the edge off a bit, but as many others have said the trouble comes from the element that will cause trouble whether pubs shut at 11.00, 12.00 or 3.00am.

I used to run the Prince Regent of old and the Stone House when it re branded. There is an optimum close time for an individual business. There is no point in staying open when you are paying staff to do nothing. I would suggest that 2am really does have to be the point at which you start to look at your income versus wages, especially if you didn't have the extra door income. I do believe that pubs/clubs should have the option as to when they close. It is a proven fact that having pubs close at the same time there are flashpoints, especially in a town such as Hertford. in my opinion pubs/clubs will not be opening ridiculous hours, there is an advantage to apply for them now and decide later not to use them if need be. I don't think that councils and police should be that draconian at the application stage, as some are, reason being it will be so much easier to challenge when the new laws come in place. Let's see what finally comes out this complete disaster and then take issue where need be. The customer will win at the end of the day and, unfortunately, pub managers will be the forever losers, more hours, more pressure on gaining extra income and then having to answer for the wage bill at the end of the day.

But on topic, local force are opposing a lot of licenses, even those for midnight and venues where there has not really been any past issues. Could just be testing each case as it comes up but there does appear to be a directive from a higher office than those we know.

Rooster, you have my sympathy. I hear this sort of story all the time. The people who bought into Gravesons are a prime example. Did they not see the White Hart opposite or even think about viewing on a late Friday or Saturday to see what it was like. At £250,000 a go, I know i would have. Bit late moaning now.

The force are not opposing ours! They tell us that they are quite happy with what we have asked for. Mind you we have only applied for a half hour Mon - Thurs and Sun and then 1 hour on Fri and Sat to be used if necessary. Unfortunately a woman who has moved in across the road from us only 2 months ago (!!) has written to all the residents telling them to oppose the application. She told me they moved out of the town to get away from pubs and drinking (and moves opposite a pub [?][?][?]) Makes you wonder about goes on in some peoples' heads at times.
