Hey - I was in Pizza express last night and had that very same conversation on the walk there. We even went in the underpass - the kind of place you wouldn't catch me within 500 yards of in London. I never looked behind nervously once! Hope I am not in a fools' paradise but it certainly does feel like Paradise compared to my evenings out in London - about 1 mile further up Green Lanes than you John! Up Green Lanes. From Wood Green. Two weeks ago. It's very nice, esppecially mid week. I have to say that the town centre on a Saturday night *can* seem more intimidating (to me) than Wood Green ever was. That's not a Hertford thing, I find it in any town centre, especially the smaller towns. However in every other aspect it's much much nicer. Even the traffic that people complain about is nothing compared to what we've just moved from. I can expect to find myself complaining about in a year or so's time though :) The biggest difference we noticed on our first couple of nights was just how quiet it was - overnight that is. We've moved to Byde St. (temporarily, we'll soon be moving again in Lower Bengeo) and outside the rat-run times, it's very very quiet (even the rat-run times it's not really noisy).

Welcome to Hertford - I'm sure you will love it. We were Turnpike Lane End of the High Street - seems to be a litle band of disaffected ex - Haringey residents in Hertford. We moved just over a year ago and have never looked back - absolutely everything seems better to me. I actually walked up up Wood Green High Road a couple of weeks ago for the first time since we left and couldn't believe the dirt, noise and gangs of youths. We are well out of it, I think.

I don't disagree. I just hope the good burghers of Hertford don't feel that the mass influx of dis-affected ex-Haringey will lower the tone. :-)

We moved from Wood Green!! love the place..Hertford that is! only thing we miss are the shops on Green Lanes 24/7 , also striking was the lack of other ethnic groups(non-white) during both Hertford and Ware fundays..shame really ,would be nice to have a greater mix of peoples

Yeah, it was very good during the World Cup because of the mix. Didn't matter whoever won there was a part atmosphere, but especially after the Turkish beat Senegal(?). I'll still be going into London at times though, one reason for living near North station.

Well, can't say I missed the all night horns tooting, party poppers and general yelling that went on in Green Lanes following Turkish matches. Lots of people I know wouldn't go out on football nights because of the general rowdiness and drunken behaviour down there. It wasn't always friendly stuff either - especially if Turkey lost. You could guarantee police sirens and helicopters by about 2.00am. I don't miss that!

We moved up from Hackney about a year ago. On the night our buyer came round to view our flat, the street was full of rubbish bags due to a dustmans' strike, local kids were using fireworks as surface to surface missiles, and there was a big yellow police sign outside asking for information on the latest murder!!! I'd never go back. Living in Hertford is like being on holiday.

I agree.. We moved up from cricklewood about 6 months ago - when I go back down there I can't believe I didn't move to hertford sooner... we love it here!!

The problem is, you work too hard Justin! But we need you to stay and keep providing us with the best dinner menu in town. The thing is, most things are easier to come by in the city -- and I guess ingredients are no exception -- but the level of stress is just too much. Towards the end of our time in London we couldn't move the car without losing a parking space within 10 minutes of our house. (come to think of it, we couldn't move the car, full stop!!) Ahhhhh, Hertford!
