Queen
I was reading a biography of the rock group Queen last night and I did not realise their first gig under the name 'Queen' was at Balls Park, Hertford. It is hard to think that Hertford launched them on to the superstardom that followed!

Yes Arthur, and not only was I there that night in Novemnber 1970, I was one of the committee that had booked them, they were 3rd support act at the Balls Park Xmas Ball, and had been booked under the name "Smile" but when they turned up they announced that they were now called "Queen". They did not perform on the main stage but on a temporary Dais about a foot high at the back of the main hall. I cannot remember them as being outstanding, and when I went in to see them, there were probably only about 30 students in the audience, as all the rest were bopping away in the refectory to the Disco!
