Hartham Common Name Change

Tuesday 18 June 2013

Council-owned Hartham Common has joined the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge, meaning it will now be officially known as Queen Elizabeth II Field Hartham Common - although for everyday purposes it will still be referred to as Hartham Common.

The green space is one of 2,012 sports pitches, woodlands, play areas, gardens and parks across Britain joining the challenge which has committed to ensuring these sites are preserved for the future.

Linda Haysey, Executive member for health, housing and community support, said: "By joining the challenge East Herts Council is underlining its commitment to preserving this popular space for local people and their families into the future."

Hartham Common is home to a leisure centre and swimming pool, parking and toilets, play areas, a skate park, 11 football pitches, a bowling green, tennis courts, trim trail and a network of riverside and woodland walks. It's just five-minutes' walk from Hertford town centre.

Historical references to Hartham Common go back to William the Conqueror although there are no longer any commoners' rights registered to any common land owned by the council.
