The long term future of the Waitrose branch in Bircherey Green is in doubt after John Lewis revealed they were in talks with Van Hage to build a new 40,000sq.ft store at Great Amwell.

A spokesman for Waitrose said: "There is a long way to go, but if we were to get a planning consent in the future for a store at Great Amwell, it would see the relocation of Waitrose Hertford, however we will look at whether it will be feasible to retain a presence in Hertford as well."
The Waitrose store in BIrcherley Green still has a number of years left on its lease and any new store at Great Amwell would require planning permission.
It is anticipated that an exhibition and public consultation on the plans will be staged in the near future.
