Alworths Faces Closure

Saturday 2 April 2011

Son of Woolworths store Alworths in Maidenhead Street is facing closure after the company filed for administration on Monday.

The store has only been open for five months after taking on the former premises of Woolworths.

The company was started in 2009 by Andy Latham, who was previously a director at Woolworths. Latham resigned from Alworths in early March and has founded a new company named Retail Acquisitions with Chris Althorp-Gormlay, boss of private equity firm SKG Capital. It is thought that the company may try to buy Alworths from Administrators.

In Bircherley Green, another variety store is also closing it's doors, having traded for just four months.

The former premises of M&Co were occupied by the business at the end of November on a short term lease.
